umaaelau Jluioaq After selectlng Mr Chlddxx as thexr commander ln chief Johnny Smlth as thelr general and Tom Paxton and Joyce Stephens as able top sergeants the jumor class of 1941-42 havmg an army of 101 strong ambltlous soldlers was ready to wage a battle for vlctory Wlth hope ln thelr hearts and fxght ln thelr souls they set out on the long march to oxercome the hardshlps of the comlng year and wln for themselxes the rlght to a blgger and better banquet and prom than the students of N C H S had exer before known Thelr advance for the flrst month was unmolested and the tray el qulte sxmple thelr only obstacles belng several short movles presented ln the school adultorlum on Wednesday or Thursday evenings AdmlSSl0D of f1ve and ten cents was charged and the students were strongly urged to brmg thelr parents and frlends as all money taken ln at these shows was a clear proflt for the junior treasury During the fxrst weeks of November they were fllled wlth the deslre for a great battle so a major release fllm was ordered and on the thlrteenth of the month Boys of the Clty was presented Due to the fact that lt was shown durmg school hours nearly the entire student body attended and the undefeatable army won the battle wlth flying colors and a tldy sum to start thexr account Durlng the same month the jumors sponsored the seml annual jumor senlor party The flrst of these partles was fmanced by the Jumors and the second by the Senlors The party had a patrlotlc theme All Gut for Defense and the gymnaslum was decorated Wlth Amerl can flags and natlonal posters Durlng the flrst part of the party group games pertalnmg to the theme of the party were played The students partlclpatlng were dlvlded Into four groups representlng the branches of servlce namely army naxy marines and alr corps Refreshments were served followed by danclng for those who enjoyed an actlwe entertain ment and table games were played by those not qulte so mclmed At the end of thls vlctorlous offenslve the advance came to a halt and the army made wmter camp During the wmter months small scoutmg partles were sent out to enlarge the bank account by sellxng soft drxnks and candy at the home basketball games January measurements were taken for the class rmgs Fhey were called out of class for the occaslon On the way back they stopped and looked at the senlor panels ln the hall thev re gettlng closer and closer the sprlng the army came forth w1th vlslons of new horlzons to conquer and although we had lost several soldlers from the mfantry we sponsored a maglclan show whlch was a great success The student body of N C H S undoubtedly enjoyed the mystery of th1S type of entertamment for w1th1n two weeks a second show of thls descrlptlon was presented with favorable results The fxnal battle was a movle entltled Three Leglonnalres whlch ralsed the funds nn the treasury to such a helght that after collectlng the class dues which was an old custom xt was not necessary to charge a fee for elther of the two followlng celebratlons whxch always fol low the year of hard work The flrst of these two great occaslons was the junlor senior banquet Thls was a gala affalr on April 17 It was held ln the gym and food was brought IH from a catermg concern Both classes shared the expense of thls banquet The theme was chosen by a commlttee and was followed through ln the arrangement of tables decoratlons speeches programs and favors The school year was chmaxed wlth the colorful prom on May 8 whlch the jumors sponsored for their devoted upperclassmen The most outstandlng exent was the popular grand march ln whlch exeryone jomed and seemlngly had a lot of fun for sure After these two great exents none could say that the battles they had fought durmg the year were fought m xaln 0 0 . . . . , . . .
