V arsity The 1963 football campaign saw a very inexperienced Panther team take the field. The Panthers started slow with a tie with Yankton and losses to powerful Bellevue and Big Ten rival Fremont. The Panthers then won their first game over South Sioux City 20-0. In the Homecoming game the Panthers tied Kearney 6-6. Then the Panthers began to flex their muscles and beat rival Grand Island 19-13 and Hastings 19-6. The Panthers closed out the season with a loss to Columbus 34-7 and a win over Nebraska City 21-0 giving the Panthers a record of 4 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties. Although our Panthers did not win a championship they progressed and improved all through the season. There were only seven seniors on the 1963 Panther club and much valuable experience was gained by our underclassmen w'hich should show up next season. Our Panthers proved themselves that through hard work and desire plus a lot of pride, which 1 would like to feel all our boys possess, they could come back from, a poor start at the beginning of the season and win some important ball games for Norfolk High School. Congratulations, fellow's. You did a good job and the coaching staff was proud of you and of your season record. We will be looking forward and setting higher goals for you to accomplish next year, however, and I am sure that you are capable of reaching any goals that are set for you if you so desire. Big Ten Conference Champions Class A District Champions The Panther basketball team of 1963-64 has many accomplishments of which to be proud. Not only did they perform with excellence on the playing floor, but they also maintained high standards in the classroom and in other organizations.lt was truly a team of spirit and dedication. I believe the following poem describes this year's team better than any words I could write because the success of the team was due to a basic belief that they could reach pre-set goals. Coach Jina Riley If you think you are beaten, you are; If you think you dare not, you don't. If you'd like to win but you think you can't. It's almost a cinch you won't. If you think you'll lose, you're lost. For out of the world we find Success begins with a fellow's will--It's all in the state of mind. If you think you're outclassed, you are; You've got to think high to rise; You've got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize. Life's battle don't always go To stronger or faster man; But soon or late the man who wins. Is the one who thinks he can. os --Walter D. Wintle Bob Schmidt drops in a two-pointer against Yankton. Without Miss Wagner, my staff, the local photographers, the faculty, and my friends, it would never have been possible. We have tried to make this yearbook one of the best, and one with many memorable pages. If, when you leaf through this annual, you are proud of it and proud of Norfolk High School, then all the late hours, hurried trips to the studios, and many problems have been well worth it! Mr. Welch will long be remembered for his concerts, his marching bands, his fine orchestras, his pep bands, and, most of all, his enthusiastic spirit, which was obvious in his trademark Let's go gang! Thank you, Mr. Welch, for 22 years of devoted teaching and service from the students and faculty of Norfolk High School. Merton V. Welch Senior Skip Day May 19, 1964 After the banquet, the seniors loaded the buses which took them to the Indian Hills Theater where they saw the movie It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World at which they laughed, and laughed, and laughed, and laughed. After the movie, they went to King's Drive-In for an hour coke-time. The weary seniors and their sponsors arrived home at 2:00 Wednesday morning, after a very enjoyable and unforgettable day. The seniors boarded buses on the east side of the school at 6:00 Tuesday morning, to go to Omaha for the day. They stopped in Fremont for breakfast at 7:30. After lunch downtown on free time, the seniors toured the Kitty Clover Potato Chip plant, where they received free samples! The first thine they did after arriving in Omaha was to tour Joslyn Memorial Art Museum. At 5:30 that evening the seniors met in the ballroom of the Castle Hotel for a banquet at which the Senior Girls' Trio sang. The next stop before more free time, was at the Omaha World-Herald building. May 29, 1964 The seniors participating in the Senior Daypro-gram met at 8:30 that morning to practice. At noon all the seniors and their sponsors attended the Senior Luncheon at the Hotel Madison. As Dan Ireland, Narrator, looks out on the Window On the World, members of the senior class pass by showing the many activities participated in by their classmates during four years at NHS.
