NOOKSACK'S TALENTED TRACKM EN The Pioneers had a new but very talented group of boys participating in the running and field sports of the T955 track season. Only two returning lettermen, David Schweigert and Bill Sturgeon, were members of the team. Two boys, both of whom are sophomores, placed in the Whatcom County track and field meet. Evan Lee won second in the 440 yard run and Neal Langley took third in the mile, this gave them a chance to enter the district meet. The Pioneers are expected to be much Stronger next year for they will have practically the entire team returning. Much will be expected from the talented freshmen who also had a county meet this year. Two Nooksack freshmen, Bill Schweigert and Cliff Russell, placed in this meet. Winning seven, while losing only one, the Nooksack Valley Babes tied with Blaine Junior High for the Whatcom County championship. Although the Babes shared the championship with Blaine, they beat the Borderite Juniors by a score of 50-30. The Babes lost only to Mt. Baker in a very close game that was decided in the closing min- utes of the contest. The score was 25-24. Jerry McBeath, a member of the freshman squad, won the foul shooting contest by hitting twenty-one out of twenty-five shots. SMALL IN NUMBER GREAT IN ABILITY Thirteen boys met Coach Wells last September as turn out began for junior high football. Although they were small in number, they were not lacking in talent, for they went on to win third place in their league. One of the standout games of the season was a O-O game with Mt. Baker. The Pioneer Babes scored once, but the touchdown was not counted because of a penalty before the play. ALMOST CHAMPIONS Supplied with a tremendous amount of desire and natural ability, the Nooksack Valley Babes opened their baseball sea- son with a 24-3 win over Lyn- den. This was followed by wins over the next five teams. With the above the record, and with only one game left, it seemed almost certain that the Babes would be county cham- pions: then disaster struck! By some timely hits the Fairhaven team defeated them, 7-4. The Babes did not have a game scheduled with the cham- pion Whatcom Warriors.
