BOTTOM ROW: Lyle Thompson, Bob Eiene, Bud Case, Teddy Iverson, Dave Schweigert, Stuart Kale, Ronnie Henderson, Johnny Panagos, Manager. THE PRIDE OF NOOKSACK VALLEY Losing only to the powerful Blaine Borderites and the Champion Mt. Baker Mountaineers, the Nooksack Valley Pioneers finished third in the Whatcom County Football League. Outstanding games of the season included a I4-I2 win over Vancouver College and a O-O de- fensive duel with the Ferndale Golden Eagles in a non-league game. The Pioneers had a very strong line and an all-around good defensive unit but lacked size and experience in the backfield. With many returning lettermen and some good Freshmen, the Pioneers should have a good team next year. However, the loss of quarterback Dick Forthun and tackle Bill Sturgeon, all-state alternate nominee, as well as many others, will certainly be felt. The i954 team elected an inspirational player, Lewis Minaker, and an honorary captain, Dick Forthun. A trophy, with the name of the inspirational player engraved on it, will be kept in the trophy case, and a miniature football was given to the honorary captain. Way to smear them boys. Forthun on the loose again.
