Page Q Q 53 .C MSSE 5 3 bbzlfttillf Qllmas 3 isinrg It was a great day when the future Class of '45 invaded the already long-suffering high school and proceeded to obtain what might pass for an education. Nearly seventy childish voices were heard plaintively lisping, But where do I go now? for the first few weeks, and then we settled down to business. Class officers were chosen: David Wood- ard. president: Harry Merriam, vice-president: Mldred Mathes, secretary-treasurer: Pat Miles. council member: and Marion Johnson, reporter. To keep us away from too much trouble, Mr. Lam- bert acted as advisor. A class party near Christ- mas, and our assembly program, in which we pre- sented the play When The Stars Fa1l, were the highlights of the year. Reenforced by the Everson students, we consid- ered ourselves very sophisticated. and completely scorned the poor green freshmen until someone asked, How long was it since you were suffering in their place? With Mrs. Betty Pence as advisor. our class leaders -were Marlowe Handy. president: Pat Williams, vice-president: Luella Davis. secre- tary-treasurer: and Alvin Koetje, council mem- ber. A skating party was held in October. and the assembly play of the year before was presented for Victory Varieties. Back again after vacation, we started our junior year with Don DeBoer as president, aided by Bob Lambert, vice-president: Wanda Goldsmith. sec- retary-treasurer: and John Nieuwendorp. council member. Affairs were directed by Miss Ruth Sus- man. Another skating party was held and of course, the Junior-Senior banquet which was a great success, even if we do say so ourselves. Returning as full-fledged seniors. the next fall. with diminished numbers, but undiminished spirit, we proceeded to show the school who was boss. Did we find out! Class officers included Harry Merriam, president: Bob Lambert, vice- president: Kay Piro, secretary-treasurer: and Eileen Craig, councTl member. Mrs. Pence again took the job of steering us along the straight and narrow. Activities included the senior play, Act Your Age. and a class party-both remarkable successes. We also bought calling cards. announce- ments, and class rings which were the envy of the school for weeks. At our assembly program we presented a service plaque to the school as a lasting memorial of the Class of '45-just as if anyone could forget us! Graduation exercises were held May 24, and everyone in the class felt a pang of regret to be leaving the place where he had spent four happy years. Now. with our high school days over, we must look to the future-both our future and our country's. X.. During our journey through the quiet valley country, we arrive in the little town of Seniors- on-the-Nooksack. We enter the city hall'to tint the profound affa'rs of the city handled by the competent mayor, Lawrence Benner, and his city clerk. Louise, Parrott, sitting on his knee. Reeling from the shock we staqger into the next-door tavern to find Joe Lindgren and wife iEthel Con- nelll tending the bar. Completely recovered and out in the street again, we meet a newsboy. Art Moe. vending copies of the Senior Journal, owned, edited, man- aged. and published by Marion Johnson. Blaring headlines announce, I-IANDY'S HOMER WINS SERIES FOR YANKSl exclusice story by Donal! DeBoer. Down in the corner we find a story of Lois Craig falling off the roof and breaking her neck on the eve of her marriage to Tommy Manville. so we rush over to the hospital and find Dr. Laurence Pratt consulting with his head nurse. Janet Mulka, who is complaining bitterly about the green dietician and new night nurse, Joy Ann McCol- lum and Bertha Hunt. respectively. The door bursts open and in rushes Lyle Merk with a ladder and a couple of pails: he immediately begins to wash windows. In the ensuing scramble, we find ourselves out in the sunshine-predicted as rain by Weatherman Frank Kolasky. We walk down the beautiful street planned by Johnny Nieuwendorp, built by the Bill Fullner Construction Company, and cleaned last night by Cornie Pen. Sniffing the delicious odor of fresh hot dogs, we enter the grocery, dry goods, hard- ware, fountain, and used-car store owned and op- erated by Bob Brue. In the grocery department Minnie Sterk is buying provisions for her happy home and gossiping with Mrs. Howlett lBetty DeBruynJ and Mrs. Roedell lErma Ecklorl. After passing the time of day with them. we go next door which, we discover, is a home for tail- less white mice, kept by Harry Merriam. From X across the street we hear some very unmelodious sounds coming from the barber shop owned by Bob Lambert. To our surpsise we discover a barber shop quartet made up of Milton Hicks, dog-catcher, William Visser, mechanic, Alien Sealund, farmer, and Bob himself. Conducting them is our friend Earl Sealund. To recover from this. we return up the street to find an Old Maids' Home, directed by Patti Will- iams. Some of its inhabitants for inmates! are Bonnie Hinote. Mary Dubb, Luella Davis, and Ethel Minaker, who spend their time knitting tail protectors for Harry's mice. Feeling the need for entertainment, we retire to the neighborhood theater owned by Franklin Tremlin. where we find blonde Mae West II lwhom we knew as Frences Toddi featured in a movie directed by Bryce Tilton. who coached Eileen Craig for her opera debut last month. Next we hear a lecture on the Antiquity of the Atom by Dr. Holland Roedell, famous scientist. During this learned discussion. we acquire an undeniable thirst. so to remedy this situation, we have a soda jerked by Kay Piro, and delivered across the counter in her typical tlirtatious man- ner. Looking around the store, we see advertise- ments ldrawn by Ferne Herrickl of patent medi- cines from the firm of Marion Pike. Inc. Upon further investigation, we find that the junior mem- bers of the firm include Gertie Starkenburg and Alice Cieslar. One advertisement for tooth paste we notice particularly. as the model for it is our friend Marge West. The clock in the old church tower strikes twelve, so we slowly and sorrowfully say goodbye to our friends in the quiet l?l little town of Sen- iors-on-the-Nooksack.
