Lsnroan Scoring 247 points to the opposition's 287, Coach Loyd Ledford's crew of paches completed the 1936-37 basketball season with three wins and fourteen r1!6f wefeats. QA Starting with a promising squad of fourteen players, Ledford was hard hit by the mid-year graduation of several team members and also by ineligibility of a few outstanding men. Ioe Gonzalez, inspirational Apache center, left the team to go to the coast and lett the squad in poor shape. The addition of Florencio Velasquez, however, bolstered up the squad and the Apache squad began to give better accounts of themselves in games. At the Southern Conference Tournament, the Apaches were conceded little hope of getting farther than the first round but they surprised everyone by going through to the consolation finals, dropping a close tilt to the strong Bobcats from Benson high. Those reporting for the first practice session were: Vicente Cota, Leonard Sisneros, Florencio Velasquez, Mike Rosas, Iames Goodman, Salvador Iury, Henry Robles and Rudy Guerrero, forwards: Gus Franklin, Robert Espinoza and Daniel Fimbres, guards: Iarnes Fraizer and Ioe Gonzalez, centers. Almost the entire squad will be lost by graduation. A9425 l .J lin ' f J D f

Even though the schedule called for only three games, the Papooses trained hard during the entire season, preparing for games that were few and far be- tween. The first game against the strong Tucson Indians resulted in a setback in form of a 14-6 defeat. The game was marred by roughness but the Papooses Worried their more experienced adversaries no end during the hectic fiasco. The second game of the season evened things up as Bellman's charges smothered a hapless Patagonia High School Lobo eleven, 25-O. lt was the first scalp for the seconds and gave added impetus to the second win over the Lobos by a 33-0 score. lt was the last game of the season but practice continued until the varsity completed their schedule. Gonzalo Puchi ably captained the squad. Those reporting for the initial practice session were: Florencio Velasquez, Alex Kerson, Manuel Gustellum, Fermin Del Muro, Everardo Cordova, Henry Patton, Mario Lopez, Ed ltule, loe Pierson, Benjamin Brolick, lack Titcomb, Bllly Mahlow, Phillip Saba, Frank Reed, Iohn Patton, Mario Trujillo, Hector Calderon, Frank Nava, Salvador Cota and Manager Hawley Evans.
