9,-'ltffb 5 twig A lf? INDUSTRIAL ARTS The new era in education aims, above all else, to train all of our youth to meet effectively the problems ot everyday lite. A broad outlook is an important asset in meeting lite's problems, and shop- work, as much as any subject in the curriculum, broadens the outlook of young folk since it shows them vividly the problems that contronbthe many in the world who perform manual work ot some kind. Whether the pupil is to be a lawyer, a doctor, a merchant, a banker, shopwork is ot the greatest use to him in broadening his outlook and giving him a better understanding of his fellowmen. Not only is personal proficiency in manual skills an asset to every citizeng he should have a knowledge ot manual Work if he is to have the broad under- standing necessary to meet the world's problems. No better contribution has come from the new education than this emphasis on the need of equipping youth with a knowledge and skill for manual tasks. Like the academic subjects, shopwork enriches the intellect, but it also does more. It trains the hand tor the manual tasks that are a part ot every home- makers lite. No subject in high school has met with more cordial response from either the pupils or their parents than has Industrial Arts. ba38cc MA Zi If V54
