Sometimes we see in the school simply the instrument for transferring a certain maximum quantity of knowledge to the growing generation. The school serves the living world. You should have developed those qualities which are of value for the welfare ot your community. That does not mean that individuality should be destroyed and that you are to become a mere tool ot the community. A community of standardized individuals without personal originality and aims would be a poor community, with possi- bilities for little further development. Your education should give you the capacity for independent acting and thinking, making you realize service to your community, wherever you may be, as one of your highest life problems. What you have contributed to your school community and what you will con- tribute aiter you leave school needs serious reflection. rj., Lit Q, l L X K ? ith s' re app ci for her loyalty, interest, and unpreiudiced advice duri t e past y ,we th Senior Class of 1937, cmd the Adobe Staff, dedicate th s, ur yearb ok, to Margaret Handley. A graduate of the University of Arizona, Miss Handley has brought to Nogales High School an extensive knowledge of journalism which she has applied to the weekly publication of the Apache Warcry, our school paper. As sponsor of the Senior Class she haslspent a great deal of her time helping them to make a success of each of their traditional ente I' rises. The Senior Ball, Banquet, and Ditch Day would not have materialized h she not been there to supervise them. Thus it remains that we are most grateful to iss Handley r advisor and friend. S. cmd organized themselves under the sponsorship of Miss lane Forsythe. Daniel Fimbres was chosen president cmd Winifred Miller vice-president. Even as freshmen these students showed the type of enthusiasm which was to make them one of the most activeqclasses the High School has ever seen. These same students found themselves blossoming sophomores one year later. They seemed destined to change sponsors yearly for this time Miss Elizabeth McClain and Miss Margaret Handley jointly helped to steer them along the right paths. Several members of the class were very outstanding in school activities: lone Marcus, as candidate for the Adobe Queen, and Gonzalo Puchi, as yell leader, were among those most active. The entire class gave a picnic as well as a benefit dance, thus beginning its bank account for the next year which was to feature their Iunior Prom. Iames Frazier led the class as president and De Wooddell as vice-president. 6 In their Iunior year the class really came into its element, its crowning glory being their successful Iunior Prom. Miss Charlotte Luz replaced Miss McClain as sponsor of one-half the class while the other half continued under Miss Handley. Carlos Lodoza was elected president, but as he had to leave, Barbara Macdonald, vice-president, took over his duties during the second semester. 1936-37 found the class organizing as soon as school had started. As the Iunior Prom of the previous year had completely depleted their funds, there was much work to be done. Everyone was ready and willing to lend a hand. This year Miss Handley sponsored the entire class. Money was raised by formal teas, plays, candy sales, rattles, dances, and picture shows. Three outstanding events were: The Black and White Ball, the Valentine Tea and Fashion Show, and the play, lt's The Fashion. Toward the end of the year the class was divided into two groups, the Reds and the Blues in order to raise money for the Senior Ball. Competition was to spur them ony the losing side was to give the winners a party. Fidel Enciso and Virginia White were elected president and vice-president respectively. As a finale to a successful year, the Senior Ball was given the night following graduation with their King and Queen, Ioe Garcia and Antonio Macris, reigning. The Senior Class of 1937 leaves to their successors all the pep and vigor they have shown during their four years in high school. Q,9f l'4J! wl5s. -v1'?'J wmv!! Q, ,844 ,gif-'1i,,..f 0. As we approached familiar surroundings, I recalled many memories of bygone years. To my surprise my home town no longer consisted of the one-way street of the old days. Skyscrapers .stood to the right and to the left of me. The high school which I had attended no longer stood. As I glanced towards Walnut Street, I noticed three large buildings-the new school, and an enormous stadium in the place of Herman's store, extending miles around. The stadium, I was told, was the Cactus Bowl, scene of the celebrated New Year's football game between my alma mater and a Mexico City team. During my tour of the school buildings, I stopped in the Hall of Fame, where hung pictures of some seventy odd graduating classes. The guide called my attention to the Class of '37, Tears came to my eyes as memories filled my mind. Alas, I thought, I shall probably never see them again. I was mistaken. I was to see them again, soon: in a dream. While sleeping that night, I recalled our graduation day,-some students laughing, some crying. Ahead of each was an unknown trail which fate bade him follow. After graduation, Ignacio Castro, Warcry Editor of '37, took a course in jour- nalism. He met a young lady who interfered so with his studies that he was forced to leave school. He went from bad to worse and finally jumped into the Santa Cruz River. Delia Carrillo married Mr. Dominguez's little boy Louie two weeks after gradu- ation. They have lived happily ever since. Margarita Condes met a circus clown with whom she fell in love. He promised her a beautiful home but turned out to be a drunkard: so Margarita has taken on his act. Happy Cutting and her bridegroom, Ioe, left for her ranch in Mexico the very day after graduation. They have been neither seen nor heard of since the last report that they were tangled in a revolution dealing with the price of wheat. Out in Patagonia, a big-time politician has just been elected mayor. Who? Douglas Cummings, of course. Pudgie Daniels, who took an interior decorating course, has been struggling for years with the back drops of the stage which was built at NHS in 1937. nl2cc l.-. 1 Baldy Edgell is operator of a junk shop on the edge of town. I found Fidel Enciso and Salvador Iury teaching Rosalie Bamey to play Ping Pong on the 32nd story of the La Ville Building. I Misi Espinoza, who starred in college football, is now coaching the Nogalitos Indians. ' Daniel Fimbres, wearing the same uniform and riding the same bicycle, is still delivering Western Union telegrams. N Ernest Pranzen left for Sweden in search of another Garbo, but wound up in Mexico with some cabaret dancer. ' Annie Gaffney finally overcome her shyness and has succeeded Mae West, her chief admirer being Cotton-eye Frazier. Soon after graduating Max Mitchell and Elaine Gildea formed a duet to travel around the country, but Max had to go to Phoenix, so now Elaine is doing a solo tour. Peter Gourdin is still sitting on the city park bench waiting for opportunity to come around the corner. 1 Rodolfo Chico Guerrero became the garbanzo king of old Mexico and mar- ried that girl from Mexico City. 1 Lincoln Hathaway, last of the famous Hathaway polo players, secured a job instructing the 20-30s in donkey polo. A dude captured Mildred Kane and took her back to Boston where she is now the dominator of society. ' Hector Larriva has achieved his desire of becoming a retired owner of one of the largest retail grocery stores in the Southwest. Robert Lee has done everything everywhere-from writing books to manufac- turing rotten egg gas, but now has disappeared. Lucille Lowe and her husband are running a pop-corn stand in Phoenix. Barbara Macdonald did NOT marry her teacher, but has married two or three other fellows since and is still going strong. Tony The Greek Macris is head of the Fox Nogales Theater while Squinkley is still burning up the pavement on Hudgin Street. A Spiro Panas since his return to Greece is still trying to convince the natives that he is Apollo in the flesh. Iune Pitts, trained nurse, is specializing in head treatment-the morning after. Bernice Price, the cartoonist, is still competing with Petty, the Esquire artist. She will probably win out as he is becoming rather old and shaky. xlficc if W 1 Fannie Rochlin is busy with her old habit-saying no when the answer is yes and vice versa. Following the footsteps of his famous instructor, Coach Ledford, Mike Rosas has become athletics coach at Nogales High School. Though growing a trifle stale, Leonard Sisneros is still training to compete in the 440-yard dash in the 1990 Olympics. Ioe Welty and Iohn Underwood have formed The Welty and Underwood Creamery Company. Ioe milks the cows. Mary Valdez was discovered accompanying that world famous tenor, Antonio Villanueva, at the Metropolitan. Elaine McLaurin is Manuel's latest. Vaca is still, however, unable to settle down. Lillian McClure did NOT marry Chalo but is raising chickens with her husband who is a farmer near Patagonia. Winiired Miller and Betty Wooddell, now happily married, run over to each other's house now and then to compare notes. Result: CHAOS! Theodora Villa established a dress shop and now may be seen at any time of the day telling her grandchildren how to run it. De Wooddell is a rancher as you would suspect but he comes to Nogales to sing a solo in the Episcopal choir every Easter-dragging the little woman behind him. Virginia White still taking care of all the neighborhood kids-including all those of her relatives. And in conclusion a word about our advisor, Miss Margaret Handley, who is now resting on her laurels which she received as owner and manager of the Handley Associated Press, one of America's largest newspaper concerns. The most important branch of her syndicate is the Apache Warcry, distributed weekly from the city of Nogales, Arizona. 74fLafv :I44c 5 SENIOR WILL We, the Senior Class of 1937, being of sound mind and body, do leave, Nogales High School with mixed feelings of both sorrow and gladness-with sorrow because some of us must go to work, and with gladness because we won't have to listen to the following people any more: Robert Berrellez, Miss Handley, Iulia Munguia, Mr. Elliott, and the noise in the hall. WALLACE As we look back into the Iunior memory book of 1933, we see a group of 38 pupils promoted into the eighth grade, which in that year was to be part of the high school. Although fearful of the upper classmen, they proved that year by giving a dance, by placing second in the queen contest, and by playing an important part in football and basketball that they were worthy of consideration. This, of course, was due to the able sponsorship to Mr. L. Bellman and the direc- tion of Gerald Zenizo, then president. During their freshman year Gus Franklin was outstanding in track. He placed second in broad jump, third in high jump, and second in pole vault. They placed second for the second time in the King and Queen contest. In their sophomore year under the direction of Francisco Gonzalez they gave a successful dance. Carlos Garcia was named all conference man in football. In the play Be Yourself, presented by the Senior Class, several Iuniors took part. Margaret Bird, Roland Bibolet, and Eddie Itule took part in the musical contest held in Bisbee. Those who made the Iunior Honor Society were Leslie Hardy, Roland Bibolet, Margaret Bird, and Cecilia Tostado. In their Iunior year, because Mr. L. Bellman did not have time to attend the class meetings, they elected another sponsor, Mr. B. Wallace. This year they had Gonzalo Puchi as president, and under his direction they had sales, dances, and the Iunior Play entitled, Who's Crazy Now? in which the following Iuniors took part: R. Bibolet, P. Cohen, F. Piquero, L. Watkins, E. Siddell, M. Bird, H. Morse, W. Bettwy, and P. Parsons. On May 21 the Iunior Prom was held. The predominating spirit was that of a romantic garden, refreshments were served, serpentines, confetti, and balloons were distributed. In athletics Harry Karns, a Iunior, was the football captain. Among the out- standing players were C. Garcia, M. Ahumada, I. Watkins, V. Cota, G. Franklin, and I. Gonzales. Leslie Hardy was manager for both sports. Election for officers of the Board of Control was held May 3. Leslie Hardy and Francisco Gonzalez were the two high candidates for President. Alfredo Matiella was elected Vice-President, and Carlos Garcia Secretary. Q ff-sei? has ASX? WW ltfftff uf? ffl' M . 3 A .J x I 7. P . The Maroon Masque, or as it is more commonly known, the Drarnatics Club, although not exceptionally active in its own sphere this year has been strongly represented in the two three-act plays presented this year by the Iunior cmd Senior Classes respectively. They were Who's Crazy Now? and It's The Fashion. The latter of the two, presented December 10, displayed the outstand- ing abilities of several high school students. Eugene Sidell as Mr. Finklbaum and Virginia White, De Wooddell, and Ernest Franzen carried away the acting honors. The Iunior play, Who's Crazy Now? the dramatic highlight of the year, dealt with an insane asylum tor retired school teachers. All the players were unusually well cast. Eugene Sidell, Patsy Parsons, Margaret Bird, and Virginia White por- trayed their roles as the inmates ot the asylum with a great deal ot ease, and the audience thoroughly enjoyed the performance. 532: M ff? if if TMJMQ NATIONAL AND JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETIES PRESIDENT .......,,....... ..,....., W INIFRED MILLER VICE-PRESIDENT .......,.. ,..,,.....,.. ..A. INDUSTRIAL ARTS The new era in education aims, above all else, to train all of our youth to meet effectively the problems ot everyday lite. A broad outlook is an important asset in meeting lite's problems, and shop- work, as much as any subject in the curriculum, broadens the outlook of young folk since it shows them vividly the problems that contronbthe many in the world who perform manual work ot some kind. Whether the pupil is to be a lawyer, a doctor, a merchant, a banker, shopwork is ot the greatest use to him in broadening his outlook and giving him a better understanding of his fellowmen. Not only is personal proficiency in manual skills an asset to every citizeng he should have a knowledge ot manual Work if he is to have the broad under- standing necessary to meet the world's problems. No better contribution has come from the new education than this emphasis on the need of equipping youth with a knowledge and skill for manual tasks. Like the academic subjects, shopwork enriches the intellect, but it also does more. It trains the hand tor the manual tasks that are a part ot every home- makers lite. No subject in high school has met with more cordial response from either the pupils or their parents than has Industrial Arts. ba38cc MA Zi If V54 W iff y ATHLETICS ivkff 5 X pf sig 0 W qQ!U9Zvi RSF? 35,57 M QQ? H ENRY ARINO, HARRY KARNS I y Coach Loyd Ledford's Nogales Apaches completed one of their most successful seasons in years, gaining four wins, losing two and playing a scoreless tie. Ledford's first call for practice was answered by Z2 aspirants and the mentor immediately drew up a hard training routine. Those answering his first call for practice -were: H. Larriva, H. Arino, H. Karns, C. Garcia, I. Garcia, F. Holler, R. Espinoza, A. Doan, I. Watkins, I. Goodman, I. Gutierrez, A. Villanueva, V. Cota, G. Franklin, I. Patton, I. Teyechea, E. Padilla, M. Flores, A. Leyva, E. Robles, O. Bridges and M. Ahumada. The two defeats administered the Apaches came at the hands of the Tucson Badgers and the Southwestern champions, Mesa's Iackrabbits. In the Tucson game, the Apaches held the upper hand momentarily in the first few minutes of play, but a costly fumble gave the Tucsonans the ball and on the first play, they ran around the end for a touchdown, the only one during the game, which was scored not more than three minutes after the first whistle. The Iackrabbits boasted too fast and competent a squad for the injury hampered Apaches and the Mesans merely breezed through the contest. Even though the schedule called for only three games, the Papooses trained hard during the entire season, preparing for games that were few and far be- tween. The first game against the strong Tucson Indians resulted in a setback in form of a 14-6 defeat. The game was marred by roughness but the Papooses Worried their more experienced adversaries no end during the hectic fiasco. The second game of the season evened things up as Bellman's charges smothered a hapless Patagonia High School Lobo eleven, 25-O. lt was the first scalp for the seconds and gave added impetus to the second win over the Lobos by a 33-0 score. lt was the last game of the season but practice continued until the varsity completed their schedule. Gonzalo Puchi ably captained the squad. Those reporting for the initial practice session were: Florencio Velasquez, Alex Kerson, Manuel Gustellum, Fermin Del Muro, Everardo Cordova, Henry Patton, Mario Lopez, Ed ltule, loe Pierson, Benjamin Brolick, lack Titcomb, Bllly Mahlow, Phillip Saba, Frank Reed, Iohn Patton, Mario Trujillo, Hector Calderon, Frank Nava, Salvador Cota and Manager Hawley Evans. Lsnroan Scoring 247 points to the opposition's 287, Coach Loyd Ledford's crew of paches completed the 1936-37 basketball season with three wins and fourteen r1!6f wefeats. QA Starting with a promising squad of fourteen players, Ledford was hard hit by the mid-year graduation of several team members and also by ineligibility of a few outstanding men. Ioe Gonzalez, inspirational Apache center, left the team to go to the coast and lett the squad in poor shape. The addition of Florencio Velasquez, however, bolstered up the squad and the Apache squad began to give better accounts of themselves in games. At the Southern Conference Tournament, the Apaches were conceded little hope of getting farther than the first round but they surprised everyone by going through to the consolation finals, dropping a close tilt to the strong Bobcats from Benson high. Those reporting for the first practice session were: Vicente Cota, Leonard Sisneros, Florencio Velasquez, Mike Rosas, Iames Goodman, Salvador Iury, Henry Robles and Rudy Guerrero, forwards: Gus Franklin, Robert Espinoza and Daniel Fimbres, guards: Iarnes Fraizer and Ioe Gonzalez, centers.
