Those students over 17 years old were encouraged to donate one pint of their blood to this worthy cause. Fifty-eight donators passed through several stages of registration, then their temperature and blood pressure were checked. If all was in order the student's arm was then scrubbed, the needle inserted and the blood began to flow. Once one pint was drained the patients recovered and were sent to the canteen for juice and donuts to help replinish their body's nutrients. Student Council members aided the Red Cross volunteers and nurses throughout the day and stretchers were on hand for those weakened by their loss. C.P.R. A new graduation requirement for the 1979-1980 school year was Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. Students learned life-saving tech- niques that might possibly some day help to save a life. The course took a week to complete and completion was essential for graduation. Psychic Some Nitro students were convinced that psychic powers were for real when a real psychic visited the school. He amazed the student body with his ability to read other peoples thoughts. This left the student body wary of their thoughts. 87 Senior Directory JOHN H. Wildcat Domain Gets A New Paint Job A.L.C. Gets You Two Days New Attendance Policy Announced Mark DuPay - Our Man in Washington Organizations The 1979-1980 Nitro High Cheerleaders, started out with great expectations and goals to become the best squad that they could be. They attended camp, where they were chosen Runner-Up to the Golden Eagle Squad. They won eight blue ribbons on their sportsmanship, leadership, and over-all cheerleading ability. They also won a mini-meg for their over-all spirit and enthusiasm. After returning home, they went to work on the crowd for their support and recognition towards the Wildcat Team, and by the end of the year, all of this hard work and dedication paid off. Nitro High was awarded Most Outstanding Cheerleading Squad, and “Most Outstand- ing Cheering Section, at the Regional Basketball Tournaments in March. The girls really lifted the school spirit, crowd support, and school recognition this year, and they wish to thank the parents, faculty, and most of all the students, for helping them fulfill this goal. The cheerleaders would also like to recognize their sponsor, Ms. Laura Hayhurst, who helped them through their troublesome times, and who was behind them and believed in them. 118 Varsity Cheerleaders L. After opening with two straight wins, we lost three in a row. We won only two of the last five games to finish 4-6. We were disappointed in our season, because we expected to be much better. We simply made too many mistakes at crucial times. We had several injuries to key players that also hurt considerably. There were several highlights to the season, especially the playing of our defense. Our leading tacklers on defense were Mike Starkey, Chuck Smith and Mike Payne, but everyone played an important part. Tommy Halstead was the leading rusher in the KVC with 1150 yards on 219 carries. We feel that a few of our players will play college football. Heading the list are Andy Kniceley. Chuck Smith, Tommy Halstead and Mike Starkey. Next years team looks very encouraging with 11 of 22 regulars returning. Also, we were honored to add two new coaches to our staff. Coach Bernie Carney who works with our offensive and defensive lines. Coach Steve Stoffel who coaches our offensive and defensive backs. Add these two new coaches to the three other coaches, Greg Cyrus, Tom Chaney, Larry Estep and I feel we have one of the best coaching staffs around. However, we were not as successful as expected because of illness and injury. The loss of Yvonne Strohl and Gary Anderson hurt the team early in the season. In spite of these losses the Cross Country team repre- sented Nitro High very well, outstanding runners that com- piled there season were Phil Mattox, and Andy Koch, seniors: Kirk Degler, Scott Jackson and Rick Hatcher, juniors: and Tony O'Leary a sophomore. KVC Player of the Year 170 Senior - Mike Reveal Senior - Todd White Senior - Ted Hicks Baseball 1980 At the beginning of this baseball season, the outlook for a successful year was very bleak. We only had four starters returning from the previous year and only one experienced pitcher. The older more experienced players provided us with excellent leadership and solidified our team. The younger players blended in well with the older players. They all worked hard, thus, we were able to enjoy a very successful season. The Fighting Wildcats , or as we considered ourselves The Clawing Wildcats” because we had to claw, bite, and scratch our opponents to find ways to win; finished with a 12-7 record and was in the battle for the western division championship of the K.V.C. until the last day of the season. Our Seniors represented us well and now move onto different walks of life to further their successes. They will be sorely missed by all us who were associated with them this past year. Our underclassmen, more wiser than before, will be working hard looking to next year so that we may continue the winning tradition that has become synonymous with Nitro High baseball. Station ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO SET THROUGH COLLEGE IS TO GET THROUGH THE ARMY FIRST. Last fall, more than 1.9 million students entered college. Of that number, close to 500,000 will leave before June? Many students just aren’t ready for college, either emotionally or financially. That’s why it’s important to consider the benefits of an Army enlistment when you’re helping seniors consider their options. To ease the financial burden of college, the Army will help soldiers accumulate up to $8100 for their education. Under the Veterans’ Educational Assistance Program (VEAP, for short), soldiers can contribute between $50 and $75 of their pay each month. The government then matches $2.00 for every $1.00 contributed by the soldier. At the end of 3 years, if they save the maximum amount, it adds up to an educational nest egg of $8100. That’s not a bad way to start college. Besides helping soldiers save for college, the Army can also help them attend college in their off-duty time. Through Army tuition assistance, the government will pay up to 75% for Army- approved courses. Being a soldier can give a young person certain intangibles that are more valuable than dollars and cents. Experience. Maturity. And a clearer idea of what he or she wants. It could mean the dif- ference between just attending college or finishing it. If you’d like more information about the educational benefits and opportunities available in today’s Army, call your local Army Representative (in the Yellow Pages under “Recruiting”) or call toll free: 800-431-1234. (In NY, 800-942-1990.) TODAY’S ARMY IS AN EDUCATION,TOO.
