As juniors last year, our class worked together to raise enough money to have the Senior Class of 1975 a memorable prom. With- out the leadership of Mrs. Ann Meredith, it would have been much more difficult. In gratitude and appreciation for her interest and assistance, we dedicate the 1976 Nitronian to Mrs. Ann Meredith. People are of two kinds, and he Was the kind I’d like to be. Some preach their virtues, and a few Express their lives by what they do; That sort was he. No flowery phrase Or glibly spoken word of praise Won friends for him. He wasn’t cheap Or shallow, but his course ran deep. And it was pure. You know the kind. Not many in life you find Where deeds outrun their words so far That more than what they seem, they are. «as Enchanted Evening Clockwise: Mr. Lyons and Mr. May stand in the reception line; Prom decorations; Linda Dye and Gary Bright well enjoy the prom; couples enjoy a buffet style dinner; Mandy Tucker and Roger Good. 14 15 Couples enjoy good food and dance to the sound of “Black Horse” at the 1975 Prom. Shaffer 11 14 Nitro 14—Sissonville 20 Saturday the 13th was unlucky for the Wildcats as they suf- fered their first loss of the season to Sissonville, 20-14. The ’Cats played poorly in the first half and then in the final minutes Mark Atkins intercepted a pass and Gary Brightwell hit Gary Surface with five of eight passes to almost pull the game out, but Sisson- villes’ Kelly came out of nowhere to knock down a touchdown pass to Surface. John Hogshead added the two extra points for the Wildcats. 63 Gary Brightwell inches his way to a first down. 64 Nitro 23-Hurricane 0 A 30 yard pass from ALL-KVC quarterback Gary Brightwell to junior Mark Ferris and a 33 yard scamper by back Mike Collins was all that was needed to set up the ’Cats first six-pointer, on only their second offensive series of the evening. Mike Collins evenually scored from 1 yard out for the only points needed to preserve the Wildcat victroy. A fumble recovery by Dana Casto and a 16 yard pass from Brightwell to Gary Surface gave Hogshead another try and he re- sponded well, by booting a 33 yarder through the uprights to end the first half, 10-0. The second half started when Gary Surface recovered a fumble setting up the ’Cats second touchdown. Brightwell hit Ferris again, this time for 13 yards and Collins had a gutly 9-yard dash, before Mark “tick” then took it over from the two. Coach Vance put in re- serve quarterback Don Doss. Don responded very well, as he guided the ’Cats into scoring territory, where Hogshead kicked an amazing 44 yard field goal to put Nitro out in front 20-0. Hogshead's last kick of the evening came on the next offensive series as Doss put the Wildcats on the Hurricane 18 and Hogshead booted a 33 yarder to end the scoring for the evening. 65 Quaterback “keep” works. He feels that the team is working together, and has reached most of their goals. One of the biggest problems was the lack of size, but all of their hard work seems to have taken care of it. They were strong in speed and their defense, as well as in good scoring. Everything went about as well as he had expected this season. Along with Coach McMillian, the students of Nitro High School, would like to express our pride in the Wildcat Basketball squad of 1975- 76. 70 71 Girls Basketball Top to Bottom: Lynette Skeens, Lynda Nutter, Leslie Auer, Debbie Lilly, Diane Santmyer, Carla Tyree. The team placed 2nd in the Tri-Valley Conference, which was held at Hurricane, and third in the G. W. Invitational. Diane Dempsey, a senior was no. 1 for Nitro in the broad jump. Her longest jump was 15.8 were she placed 1st at Barbersville and G.W. Linda Dempsey, another senior anchored our team in the 440 and the 880 relays, she also ran the 220 and was in the Mile at the regional track meet, and was an inspiration to all. Senoir Maria Braunlin was another girl who was very strong in the 880 and a very dedicated runner. The junior team members were: R. Vance, Tami Bennett, and D. Whittington, who will be strong for us this season, as they are very enthusiastic and dedicated in practice. The big sophomore “surprise” last year was Donna Nutter, who improved greatly over the season starting with the time of 18 sec. and ending up with 15 sec. in the 110 yd. hurdles, placing 1st in the Hurricane track meet. The other sophomores were L. Hur- ley, S. Parry, and C. Riffe. Kim Derrick and Claudia Hechesky were our shot putters. Nitro was in the State Track Meet with Nutter in the 110 hurdles and the 440 relay team. Diane Dempsey also came in 3rd in the broad jump in the State Meet. Donna came in 4th and the relay team 5th. The girls will have to tighten up in practice, with the seniors gone, but we did it before and we can do it again. Ho vs Track w Back: Coach T. Chaney, J. Burdette, D. Snyder, J. Burdette, C. The boys worked hard during the spring to attain some personal goals they had set. The team leaders were seniors Robin Arthur, Don Rucker, Bob McCutheon, and Mitch Crislip—juniors Greg Cobb, Mike Collins, Mark Bailey, Mike Bailey, Mark Tyson, John Hogshead, and Jeff Nichols-sopho- mores David Thomas, Jim Burdette, and Mike Smith. Two school records were broken last spring—Bob McCutheon in the 2 Mile Run and Mike Collins in the pole vault. Members of the team that participated in the State Track Meet were as follows: Mike Collins—pole vault, Robin i Arthur-high jump, Greg Cobb-440 yd. dash, Jeff Nichols Relays, and Don Rucker Relays. These boys run in meets where the course is at least 2 miles and no more than 3 miles long. The boys don’t run in fear, but for fun. This is a grueling sport, but some individuals like it that way. There isn’t a lot of publicity in this sport, but the participant acheives self-satisfaction. 89 I know the finish line is out there somewhere. Mark Bailey says to himself. We are looking forward to an even better record than last years since we have several good players returning. Kerry Har- mon, Dave Purdy, Jim Stewart, and Jerry Pernell are our return- ing hopefuls. The reason for this misfortune being, that we (the N.H.S. golf team) had practiced on the course prior to the tournament. Although we had recieved per- mission from the main office to practice, the disqualification still held. And with an ROTC Scholarship... they pay for full tuition, books, lab fees; plus they give you $100 a month to live on while you’re in school. and your last two years of the pro- gram you get $100 a month while you're in school. Over 1000 colleges and the Army have an educational plan called Project Ahead. It’s a way for your students to enlist in the Army and start their college education at the same time. Through Project Ahead, qualified stu- dents choose the participating school they’d like to graduate from before enlist- ing. Then no matter where they study while in the Army, they'll take courses taught by accredited colleges right on post, with the Army paying up to 75% of the tuition. After their enlistment’s over, they’ll be eligible for further financial assistance un- der the G.l. Bill. It is sad to think that we are the last of the Nitro students to enjoy her company. Mrs. Mills attended W. Va. State College and did her student teaching at Nitro under Mrs. Kersey. After her student teaching was completed, Mrs. Mills was immediately hired by Nitro High for the following school year. She began teaching in 1963 and was asked by David Lee, then president of the Student Council, to sponsor the council at Nitro. Mrs. Mills enjoys the Student Council because it gives her a chance to gain a better relationship with the students. She has a great pride in Nitro High School, as well as the student council. After retiring, Mrs. Mills plans to travel, take it easy, and catch up on her reading. Even though she won’t be at Nitro, she’s plan- ning to continue helping with the student council program on the state level. She is planning to direct the Student Council Workshop being held this summer at W. Va. Wesleyan College. From the students at Nitro. . . .We wish to thank Mrs. Catherine Mills for being our friend as well as our teacher. Mrs. Cathrine Mills 198 FMC Now what? Now that you have graduated you must answer the inevitable question—“now what?” For all of you it means the continuation of studies in one way or another, because learning must and will continue throughout your lives. In the years to come you may have no more report cards or ex- aminations, but everything you do will be judged realistically. Your preparation for every goal will be carefully watched, thoughtfully evaluated. Your courses have given you the tools for thought and judg- ment. They will serve you well, whatever the future has in store for you. Here at FMC we owe much of our progress to the adoption of new ideas, new improved methods and fresh approaches brought to us by young people like yourselves who never learned to stop learning. 199 FMC Corporation FIBER DIVISION INDUSTRIAL CHEMICAL DIVISION NITRO, W.
