Following along with the theme “Rollin on the River,” the prom took place on the show- boat “Chaperon” while cruising up and down the Ohio River. To begin the evening the couples dined by candlelight to a delightful buffet dinner, which consisted of Golden Crisp Fried Chicken, Roast Beef, Escalloped Potatoes, Assorted Cheese Selections, Relish Dish, and for desert delicious homemade Apple Pie. Later in the evening couples made their way to the top deck and danced under a romantic star-lit night to the entertainment provided by the Great Pacific Ex- press. 10 Rollin' On The River 11 12 3o '3hi. enioxi rfnotlux yeox yoes fsassiny hy srfnotfiex IA zom ts hixe 3o SOnii thi. Last year as juniors, our class band together and earned the money to give the senior class of 1972 one of the best proms this school will ever see. In all sin- cerity, we could not have done this without all the time and leadership Mr. Paul McClanahan gave. We all felt the gratitude and thankfulness to him and we are now expressing it by this dedication. Mr. McClanahan also sponsors the Model U.N., which has earned recognition the last two years. He coaches the 1972 baseball team, which was Nitro’s first entry in the state tournament. With much gratitude and appreciation for his guidance and interest we dedicate the 1973 Nitronian to Mr. Paul Mc- Clanahan. WILDCATS KNOCK AWAY TO STATE TOURNAMENT The 1972 Nitro High baseball season reached a peak during the State High School Tournament when the Wildcats advanced to play the Sherman Tide. But in the eyes of Coach Paul McClanahan and the team members, the regular season was rather disappointing, even though the Wildcats were over .500. Coach McClanahan felt that Nitro had the potential to be a Tournament winner. Nitro played its best baseball during the Sectional and Regional Tournaments after the end of the regular season. With wins over Dunbar, Western Champ St. Al- bans, and a thrilling victory over Conference Champs Dupont, the Wildcats went to Parkersburg, only to lose a close one to Seth. All season, the Wild- cats had to battle the weather as well as their opponents, as eight of the ten games were played on a rtiuddy field, in the rain, putting the hard-hitting Nitro team at a dis- advantage against their heavier op- ponents. The spirit and guts of the Wildcats, however, were never in question, as was indicated in their spectacular last-minute wins over George Washington and South Charleston. She was escorted by Bill Per- row. Deena Rhodes and Cassie Bai- ley were the two other lovely ladies representing the Senior Class. Carolyn Dabney, representing the Junior Class, along with Karen Hammons, a sophomore, made up the rest of Miss Wildcat’s court. Miss Wildcat was crowned by the President of the Student Council, Jeanie Hill. Homecoming ’72 was no exception. Senior sponsor Bill Ashley, helped create a most im- pressive float that won top honors for the class of ’73. It depicted a Wildcat in the process of lighting a fire under Sissonsville Indians, “Light My Fire.” Next came the Junior class with their project entitled, “Up Up and Away,” portraying a wildcat drift- ing off a mountain top by means of various brightly colored balloons, and leaving a band of distressed In- dians stranded on the ground. 46 Junior Class: “Up, Up and Away The sophomore class (at right) got into the excitement of building their first class float for Home- coming ’72-’73, using as their theme, “Like Taking Candy From a Baby.” A wildcat was performing the easy feat of taking candy from a baby Indian sitting in a high-chair. Two clubs were also featured at the Homecoming game, these being the Spanish Club and the F.B.L.A. “El Club de Espanish” used as their theme “Spanish Harlem.” Members of the F.B.L.A. were also on hand to represent that organiza- tion. The theme for all of the class floats was, “Say it with a Song.” 47 NHS 1972 CROSS- COUNTRY iPm mm F rsf row (I to r): Steve Davis, Tim Cook, John Richards, Pat O’Dell, Jerry Whittington. A sprig of mistletoe hearlded things to come as the Winter Formal opened with a kiss. The theme, an “Old Fashion Christmas,” was carried out to perfection by the Student Council Winter Formal Committee members, headed by Debbie Hogshead. Music was provided by The Richard Stockton Quartet. The highpoint of the evening was reached by the crowning of Snow Queen. The much hearlded, surprise guest turned out to be none other than Santa himself. Coming straight from the North Pole, he immediately crowned Jeanie Hill as Snow Queen. The Queen’s lovely court included Vicki Dawson, Dorie Parsons, and Karen Weist. Santa returned to the North Pole after claiming his customary dance from the new Snow Queen. All good things must end and the Winter Formal came to a fitting close as couples departed, sealing their memorable evening with a kiss under the mistletoe. Jeanie escorted by Jerry Pettit CAGERS HAVE IMPROVED SEASON Nitro had its best record in sev- eral seasons. However, the record hardly shows what actually hap- pened or how good the team really was. More than half of the games lost were decided by less than five points, many by 1 or 2 points. The Wildcats had an all-senior starting five, rotating seven seniors in and out of the ball game most of the time. Nitro had very balanced scoring and rebounding. Seniors were Randy Workman, Randy Clark, Roger Lipscomb, Jeff Tin- cher, Greg Spencer, Rob Cole, and Martin Dooley. The experienced ’Cats were strong in almost every class as most of the varsity wrestlers had winning records. Seniors on the team were Dave Litton (co-capt.), Harvey Harmon, Johnny Matheny, Mike Sheppard, Mike Hudson, and Mike Coffey (co-capt.). Both the junior and sophomore classes were well-represented on the team as Nitro figures to be a wrestling power for a long time. At the day-long meetings, a ses- sion of the U.N. Security Council is simulated. There are two awards given at the meeting; one for the best debater of the meeting, and one for the best prepared group at the meeting. At the October 1971 meeting, Danny McGinn won the top debating award, and his group won the best prepared award. At the October 1972 meeting, Jim Romine was selected as the top debater (for which he received an all-expense-paid trip to the United Nations in New York), and Jim’s group was selected as the best pre- pared group at the meeting. Jim was also given the honor of being selected to serve as the President of the next meeting, to be held in 1974. The advisor, Mr. Paul Mc- Clanahan, has been very proud of the “clean sweep” of the awards for the past two years. Gaye Gallaway was elected to serve on the Execu- tive Committee, which organizes the meetings. Gaye took over Jim Romine’s seat on the Committee, as his term had expired. Gaye will be the main debater for Nitro at the 1974 meeting. HONOR SOCIETY Officers: President, Keith Ann Oakes; Vice-President, Dorie Parsons; Secretary, Sandy Lowther; Treasurer, Harvey Harmon. 1. Jim Romine On January 15, 1973 the Nitro High School Band marched in the Governor’s Inauguration Parade held in Charleston. In the midst of rain and cold the band led the fourth division down Kanawha Boulevard. The band marched to “NATIONAL EM- BLEM” and “TUNES OF GLORY”. The highlight of the two and one-half hour parade came as band passed the reviewing stand where T. V. cameras were situated along with a personal greeting from Governor Arch Moore. 113 CLASS OF Senior Class History It all began in 1961 . . . Twelve years later it's 1973 and the time for our graduation is near. The last three years, the ones spent at NHS, have been the most memorable. Let’s look back and recall some of the events that have highlighted our high school years ... As sophomores, we began the year by electing as class officers, President, Jerry Pettit; Vice-President, Bill Per- row, and Jeanie Hill as Secretary-Treasurer. This was also our first year to attempt to build a homecoming float, one which we entitled “Flush the Indians”. Representing our class at the homecoming festivities was Debi Davis, who was escorted by Kippy King. We began our Junior year by electing class officers: President, Bill Perrow; Vice-President, Randy Clark; and Secretary-Treasurer, Vicki Dawson. “Give ’EM Prell” was chosen for our homecoming float theme. We selected Cassie Bailey to be the Junior attendant to Miss Wildcat, and she was escorted by Steve Mallett. We, as Juniors, put our heads together in an effort to produce an ideal Jr.-Sr. Prom. After long hours of planning and fund-raising, and after much cooperation and supervision from our sponsor, Mr. Paul McClanahan, the prom was held aboard the showboat, “Chaperon”, and our attempt to create a unique and an unforgettable prom had been achieved. We used the theme, “Rollin' on the River”. Then, before we had time to realize it, the big year was upon us . . . Yes, at last we were seniors. We chose Randy Clark as President. Bill Perrow as Vice President, and Secretary and Treasurer were Vicki Dawson and Denny ull, respectively. As Seniors, we selected burgundy and white as our class colors, and the pink rose to be our flower. Our homecoming theme was “Light My Fire” and our float won the class competition. Vicki Dawson was chosen Miss Wildcat, and senior attendants were Cassie Bailey and Deena Rhodes . . . All of these are events that we want to remember, but the things that will really stick with us are too numer- able and too varied to list. After spending three years at NHS we have a permanent impression of our school, and regardless of what kind of people we become, we are forever going to remember NHS. 116 President Randy Clark Secretary Vicki Dawson 117 Kay Alford Missy Anderson Kim Arthur John Ashford Bruce Angell Roger Atkins 118 Va i I Cassie Bailey Debbie Bailey Garland Bailey Jan Bailey Jane Bailey Margaret Bailey Most Popular Jeanie Hill and Randy Clark 119 Most Talkative Nancy Hartley and Mike Brown Marlene Bailey Melody Bailey Sabra Bailey Bobby Ball Friendliest Nancy Hartley and Denny Null 120 Richard Bernard Best All Round Karen Wiest and Jerry Pettit Chris Barth Jay Bartlett Julie Belcher Mike Belcher Charles Bonnett 121 Vicki Barnett Robin Bonnett Mike Borash Charles Bradley Charles Brick Mike Brown Mike Brown Debbie Burdette 122 Mike Burdette Bryan Casto Helen Casto Rusty Casto Sharon Cecil 124 Barry Chapman John Cole Pam Comstock 125 Bill Crawford Martin Dooley Debra Dempsey 126 Robin Donohoe 127 Most Talented Jeanie Hill and Charlie Thomas Prettiest Smile Sharon Miller and Steve Young Kim Estep James Evans Sharon Fisher Susan Milam Gandee Randy Gilbert Paul Gill Dale Goff 128 Ronny Good Kathy Gould Mike Graley Mark Haber Sherry Hackett Edward Hamilton Harvey Harmon Debbie Harris 129 Philip Harrison Nancy Hartley Robert Haynes Robert Hickman Donna Higgins Jeanie Hill Jennifer Hill 130 Regina Hill Steve Huey Sabrina Huffman Pam Hughes Best Looking Terry Sword and Rick Barnard Brenda Hogan Tina Hughes Mike Hudson 131 Larry Ice Mrs. Ann Meridith Biology Donna Jefferies Rhonda Jeffers Tom Jones ------- V I Marie Javins Donald Jefferies 132 Raymond Knapp Steve Kniceley Karolee Kronlein 134 David Litton Karen Lockhart Sandy Lowther Kathy Lowe Tonya McClure Terry McDougal 136 Cathy McGrath Mark McHenry Terry McIntyre Greg Mannix Robin Mallett 137 Steve Mallett Janice Markham Brenda Martin Debbie Martin Joy Pritt Martin Susan Martin Johnny Matheny NITRO VS ST.
