SENIOR CLASS NITRO HIGH SCHOOL Nitro, West Virginia Foreword “Hello! I am the new building. I have come to lead you through the pages of this ’54 Wildcat and tell you about myself and my predecessor. “The seniors of ’54 will not be graduated in my halls as I will not be com- pleted. The last vestiges of my former self, which have been standing since 1918 where I will soon stand, still contain the last group of seniors and under- classmen it will ever hold. But next year I will take over and start my job. “This year’s seniors have really had a hectic year, what with me in the process of being built and only one-third of my former self still standing. In spite of many handicaps, they have come through with flying colors and I am proud to present them to you in this, the ’54 Wildcat.” ( able o Faculty Departments 11 Seniors 13 Underclassmen________________________ 31 Activities and Organizations 47 Features____________________ 67 Athletics________________ 75 Advertising 89 he (Wildcat Staff Co-Editors _ MARILYN SMITH, POLLY WRIGHT Business Manager.......................................... To the Kanawha County Hoard of Education and its chief executive officer, the superintendent of schools, whose top level decisions are making possible the construction of a new building for Nitro High School, the Seniors of 1954 take great pleasure in dedicating the ’54 Wildcat. NITRO HIGH SCHOOL Walur F. Soydar, Principal N1TRO. WEST VIRGINIA To the Seniors of 19? : When I was a senior in high school, I recall my being quite concerned when graduating exercises were referred to as commencement. Why, I asked my- selr, should the culmination of twelve years in the public schools be referred to as commencement? The intervening years have answered that question ror me many times, Just as the vears ahead will answer it ror vou. vou will begin an entirely new pattern of living vhen you are graduated rather abruptly into a world vhich will include several of these adult experiences: earning money to sunport yourselves, deciding how to spend it, continuing your education beyond high school, a full-time Job, membership in the armed services, marriage, parent- hood. As you leave Nitro high school, arter twelve years of oreparation for the resoonsihiliti s of adult living, it is ray hope that much or the training you received here'will help you solve those problems and make those decisions which lire will thrust unon you in the years ahead. Our surroundings are examples of nature’s arts: the vari- ous geometrical designs in Mother Nature, the blending colors of the forests in the fall, the pastel hues of a summer evening’s sunset. Through music, one of the fine arts, one finds enjoyment, entertainment, relaxation, and appreciation of a new world. Leona Shipley S. M. Shipley B.S. Morris Harvey A.B. Marshall Mathematics 10 0)epartments Social Studies An understanding of our world his- tory, government and people is essential to the development of good citizens and wholesome personalities. The social studies include the study of citizenship, government, history, current events, social problems, reforms and people. Industrial Arts Industrial arts trains many boys for their occupations, teaches basic handy - man work, and stimulates interests which be- come hobbies or part-time jobs. The work in wood, ceramics, metal, drawing, and printing is the foundation for carpenters, draftsmen, printers, architects, ceramic artists. English The English learned in school is the foundation upon which we build our lives. It is the basis of our commu- nication system — conversation, writing and reading habits. Good English is an asset in any field but poor English is a millstone continually holding us back. Business Education One of the most prevalent occupa- tions of the present-day female is a sec- retarial position. To prepare the commercial-minded, typing, shorthand, and business training are taught. These studies require accuracy, mus- cular co-ordination, and speed. Home Economics Home Economics’ basic goal is to produce good home-makers. It develops creative skills, intro- duces hobbies and leads to occu- pations in related fields. Physical Education The physical aspects of the body, as well as the mental, must be developed and built. By including physical educa- tion in the school curriculum, the bodies of students are strengthened, exercised, and fully developed. Fair play, good sportsmanship, re- sponsibility, character development, and honesty are a few of the qualities gained in such classes. 12 Se U n Valedictorian Salutatorum TOU be 3 4; s. K n Co cl a.
