Dear Nitro Family, January 1991 By now you are well aware that the conflict with Iraq began on 16!17 January 1991. NITRO was in the Gulf of Suez having completed the transit of the Suez Canal about 6 hours earlier. Other than a feeling of heighten tensions and a small scare about two hours after hostilities began, all of us are fine and fully prepared to fulfill our mission in this conflict. We are now three weeks into the deployment and the time has gone by quickly. This letter is to let you know that while it is not by choice we left and are heading over to the Middle East and all the potential danger it holds, we do realize why our mission takes us overseas. We realized when we joined the Navy that this time could possibly happen and we would be called upon to fulfill our assignments. Since leaving home we did not just put our trust in the hands of the politicians to avert the conflict but rather we have been training vigorously to be prepared to defend ourselves. I have the utmost confidence in the crew's abilities. I set the goal and the crew is doing their portion so that everyone who sailed on 28 December 1990 or will join us overseas will return home safe and sound. The goal is not limited to casualties resulting from armed conflict. Our goal also is to prevent accidents or injuries of any kind. By the time you are reading this familygram we will be over in the North Arabian Sea. In all probability you will know what is happening over in the Gulf before we do. We do not receive CNN or the other news senlices. During the conflict follow the news on the USS Theodore Roosevelt CCVN-71j, the carrier we are supporting. Should the news report damages to ships in the battle group be assured that unless you hear from Commodore Franz, Nitro is safe and still fulfilling its role in the grand scheme of events. I will send word back as soon as I can but if the volume of message traffic is as expected a routine message back home will not be transmitted in any rea- sonable timeg fAlVICROSS messages before the conflict started were taking 4-5 daysj. The Com- modore has agreed to keep my wife Kathy and the ombudsmen, Deena Weed, and Judy Brauer informed. In this instant No news will in fact be good news. Our time over here will be intense, often times hectic and always demanding, but it should pass quickly for us. We will be busy providing services to the largest concentration of US Naval forces since Viet Nam, 20 years ago. While we will be concentrating on the task at hand, a small part of us will continually think about you back home. My wife, Kathy, has told me the Support Group is already planning our homecoming - we look fonNard to that as much if not more than you do. That day is one of the greatest days in a saiIor's life and quickly overcomes the pain of the separa- tion. The prettiest sight in the world is a loved one waiting on the pier when the ship ties up after a deployment. I have said many times that we are a family - the NITRO family. Those of us on the ship are working together to support each other and make this cruise a safe one. I encourage all of you to join the Nitro Support Group and support each other while we are gone. The separation may not seem any more bearable but at least you will not be alone - some other member of NITRO's family will be there for you. Take care of each other while the Duke of Earle is overseas. Keep the mail flowing this way as it is one of the biggest morale boost around. Be there for your SAILOFl - hope to see you all when we return! THINK JULY 1991
