Af Y : Ninth Avenue School, Hendersonville, North Carolina Dedication The Senior Class and Yearbook Committee of Ninth Ave¬ nue School are inestimably gratified to dedicate the 1963 TIGER to Miss Mary Agnes Jones and Mrs. Gertie Nance Hemphill. Though they have retired from the classroom, the forces for good they have exertedin young lives goes on and on. Therefore, in making this dedication we recognize our inability to sing praises communsurate with their ef¬ forts. But our words are fleeting; their labors are forever. Our tributes are for just a moment; their mark ranks with the eternal. So, in grateful humility we dedicate this Annual to them- not as a payment but as a token. In its finite way it says, " Thank you; You ' ve done well " . But though this mortal strain be silenced, daughters, be assured that the trumpet blare on the other side. MISS M. A. JONES MRS. G. M. HEMPHILL 2 As we, the members of the Class of 1963 approach our HORIZONS in the Space Age, we leave behind the indelible memories of our most pleasant experiences. Our memories are precious to us and are some of our most valuable possessions, yet how difficult it is to pre¬ serve these as time takes us further down the avenue of life. One needs something special to help retain these me¬ mories--something tangible to keep from forgetting those days of youth when a look was so important and the word TIME so significant. In the 1963 TIGER, we have tried to record highlights of events and activities of this school year. Truly we hope that now, as TIAIE passes you will have pleasant memories of Ninth Avenue School. 3 mm xnemamtip mm K ihw w -sawas Be mum % $ M yj:v?- m , : Nir th Hendersonville, Avenue Sch North Carolin Administration The administration of Ninth Avenue School is a system of much hard work and little glory. " nook is dedicated to 4 Principal’s Message On every hand men and women are quick to say that they long for success. We are ever sincere in wishing our friend success. We struggle and strive for success. You who are religious --pray for it, and you who are unreligious --woo it and entreat it with a devotion that transcends the fervency of prayer. The teachers instruct you, the editors urge you, you are told that no matter how fierce the battle, no matter what obstacles confront you, no matter how many suitors throng the gates, you can, through courage and presistance, fortitude and thrift, attain the coveted goal. The great passion of the human mind is to succeed, to get on in the world to win the things worthwhile, and to write one ' s name imperishably upon the bronze tablet of history. It is a laudable ambition, but for its accomplishment are re¬ quired certain qualities of mind and heart, with out which the best efforts will leave no more impression upon the world than a pebble cast into the sea or words written upon the sand. If we would really be concerned about success we must not think of self but rather of service. The pursuit of material success solves nothing in the world worth solving. It is a cult which deceives and demoralizes and ruins, which blinds men to their actual situation in life and which evades or ignores the real solution of proverty. Instead of fostering brotherhood and co¬ operation, the natural tendency of social man, it ferments stife. It dooms the multitude to stumble about in privation and ignorance, led by a false light. By joining hands for a common purpose you might achieve a material success in which all would share-one which would be the enduring of a higher success, a success of the social instincts and feelings, a success of moral and intellectual endeavor. By striving for individual gain, you but wreck your own and other ' s opportunities. In the stife for worldly success you waste energies that would enrich the world. You rob yourself and all men. This form of success is not Victory; it is too often defeat and impoverishment. It is the sacrifice of what is best in man for an empty prize. It means the hardening of the social feelings, the extingushment of the spirit of brotherhood, the clouding and darkening of the social vision by which a people live and become great. He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has always looked for the best in others and given the best he had; whose life was an inspiration, whose memory is a benediction. We pause here to acknowledge the faith and works of the parents and guardians of the members of the Class of 1963. This space is not to them because its offerings are obviously meager in comparison to what they have given. This space is not all about them because no one page nor even one book could contain the whole story of what they all have done in bringing their children to this day. Nevertheless, one can be quite safe in assuming that these parents have used the same basic principle that has always been used in high human efforts; clear aims, persistent prayer; an abiding faith, and steady, unashamed perspiration. This space, then, is for those who follow. Let it be known that their mark is a high mark, and for them the richest bene¬ dictions should prevail.
