IN MEMORY MR. STAN FRIESE . . . he was the quietest, gentlest, lovingest, smartest and finest man I knew . . . The above words were written by a young friend of Stan Friese, former Superintendant of Alaska State Operated Schools and Principal of Ninilchik High School. Stan died of cancer on October 23rd. Many of you knew Stan and were present at the memorial service to honor his memory with his wife Sue, his daughter, Nancy, and each other. For those of you who weren't there or who didn't know Stan, l would like to share some of the feelings that Clark Whitney expressed about him. He was a man dedicated to serving what he considered our Country's most valuable asset - as evidenced by his many years in education. On numerous occasions, l've watched him wrestle with problems that caused great personal concern. Yet, his calm forbearance and courage, coupled with a sincere desire to extend a helping hand, carried Stan and those around him over many obstacles. A man who would seek advice, explore, and yet was not afraid to make decisions. From his early days in Wrangell during World War ll when he and Sue started that first Boy Scout Troop untill his death did he cease to love and appreciate those around him. His loss will be impossible to fill. On behalf of all those who have known and loved Stan, l thank Sue and Nancy for sharing him with us. Clark has put into words what those of us who were close to Stan so deeply feel. 1
