A FRESHMAN? Kellie as Freshman Homecoming Attendant Jenny as athlete " 1 like Niles High School. All the people are interesting and the atmosphere is a lot different than Ring Lardner. I like open lunch. The activities I ' ve been involved in are intramural volleyball, basketball, and I was freshman attendant at Homecoming. I liked basketball best because of the physical challenge. 1 pushed myself to the limit. My favorite course is gym because it conditions me for sports. " Kellie enjoys meeting all the new people and having more opportunities to participate in activities that she enjoys. " In summing up my first year at Niles High School, I have to say it is adventurous. " n " I like Niles High School; it ' s more challenging than junior high school. The big difference between high school and Ring Lardner is that the high school teachers know you by your work and not your personalities. I believe the classes at high school are harder than at Ring Lardner, and I have to study more to get good grades. Being a freshman is not as bad as everyone says; I think the upperclassmen treat us fine. I enjoy playing on the volleyball and basketball teams. I wish the freshmen would have more assemblies. In summing up Nile High School, I would have to say that it is challenging. " ii Kellie Jackson I Jennv Klose Doris Golden-87 We ' ve got school spirit. During the season coach Davisson made a change in the offense and in the defense and it helped the Vikes win two of their last three games. Leading the team on the field was Senior Andre Clem- mer, as he was the leading rusher and scored the most touchdowns. On defense it was Junior Dan Hargreaves who led the team in tackles and in fumble recoveries. Senior A.J. Gaideski was the only team member of our Viking squad to be named to the Big Eight Conference, First Team. Coach Davisson: " The guys played well together for being so young, and I ' m proud of them. It was better than I expected since we only had two starters back from the 1984-85 rosier. Gaideski. It has been a memorable year in Niles Basketball annuals. The ' 86 Vikes shared the Class " A " Big Eight Conference Championship with Battle Creek Central, and won the Class " A " District Championship. The Vikes then went to round one of Re- gional play but lost to Battle Creek Central by two points in a double over- time, indescribable thriller. Senior Chris Brawley was named to the All-State team, and Junior Alex Doxie earned Honorable Mention. Both Brawley and Doxie were also named to the Class " A " All Conference team. A.J. " The Junior Varsity Girls Volleyball team is 14-6-3 with 2 matches left to be played at press time, hopefully in the win column. There are four sophomores and eight freshmen on the team. Only sophomores played on the Junior Varsi- ty last year — ; therefore, I have new team players, which makes for a young, very inexperienced team. Despite this, they have done exceptionally well, as their record indicates. They made it to the quarterfinals in the LMC Tourney, among a field of teams, and they won first place in the Edwardsburg Tourney among a field of teams. Sophomore Sandy Stone and Freshman Jenny Vales are our co-captains. It is difficult to single out one or two players, because each girls has contri- buted so much to the team and perhaps even on occasion served as a catalyst in one or more games. However, the team was led on the floor by Sandy Stone, who was the number one server. She is a powerful server, and she helped me with my team chores, too. Most consistent in the back court was Amy Wilson, and the most powerful spiker was Jenny Klose. This group has been fun to teach new volleyball skills to. They have learned more this year than many teams learn in seasons. Many matches found them winning, coming from behind, and that lakes determination. This team wanted to win and worked hard to do so. Its goal is to promote scholarship, service, leadership, and character among American high school students. Our National Honor Society chapter inducts juniors and seniors who meet requirements in all four areas. Semi-annual screenings for members culminate in a formal ceremony, inducting those students selected by the faculty council. A keystone pin is presented to the Honor Society members, symbolizing their key roles in our school and in our community. Kellie Lovelace 165 Ushers ' Club FRONT ROW Kathi Whalen. SPECIAL FEATURES T. Wilkowski D C:illiih;in 195 Time To Our Retiring Miss Yonkers Miss Betty Yonkers has served the Niles Community Schools for thirty-six years, beginning her tenure in the central building, teaching seventh, eighth, and ninth grade mathematics, and geometry in grades seven through twelve. Miss Yonkers received her undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University and completed her graduate work at the Univer- sity of Michigan. She will be returning to her hometown of Muskegon to reside. Her students and her colleagues know that Miss Yonkers never failed to give her best and expected no less from those whom she taught. The staff and students of Niles High School join together in wishing the very best for Miss Yonkers in the years ahead. T.C. oo i oUcKi Mr. Weede Mr. Wakevainen graduated from Trout Creek, Michigan High School and Michigan State University. He began teaching in 1950, " To pass on my educa- tion to other people. " Ted has taught Industrial Education in the Niles schools since 1950, and he closes his career believing that he would become a teacher again if he were starting over and choosing his life ' s work. Ted ' s proudest moments are spent with former students who want him to know that what he taught them helped them obtain a job. May all your days ahead in the Upper Penninsula give you the pleasures you ' ve earned, Ted. Mr. Wakevainen 196 — Page Credit To Dawn Callahan Say Goodbye Teachers Mr. William B. Davis left the guidance and counseling ranks at mid-year after twenty-one years at the High School. Mr. Davis be- gan his career in education in 1959, teaching sixth grade for three years and seventh and eighth grades for two years. After receiving a master ' s degree in guidance and counseling at Michigan State University, Mr. Davis came to Niles High School. His love of people and for the one-to-one assistance that counseling calls for, gave Bill many memorable years of service to the Niles students. He and Mrs. Davis have moved to Phoenix, Arizona, to be near their two daughters. Bill has earned " A place in the sun, " and those who knew him, know that his happiest hours will be spent being busy with one of his many hobbies. The Niles staff and student body send their good wishes to Bill and Sue and look forward to their return visits. Mr. Davis Mr. Edward " Bud " Weede — The Coach — leaves our hallowed halls after thirty-four years of intense involvement with the young citizens of the Niles Community, as a teach- er, coach, athletic director, and vice-principal. Coach Weede began his professional career in 1950, after graduat- ing from Central Michigan University. He credits his high school teachers for encouraging him to become a teacher and coach, and he doesn ' t hesitate one moment to assure everyone who asks that he would follow the same path were he starting over. With that ever-present grin and a gleam in his eye. Bud wants the world to know that he has enjoyed every moment of his life in sports nd education. The State of Michigan recognized Coach Weede ' s contributions to athletics and made him a member of Coach ' s Hall of Fame, in 1983. The echoes of the roaring crowds reach across the years to rest in the memory of our own Coach Weede and remind him that all of his players and friends and colleagues at Niles wish for him and Mrs. Weede all the good things in life that come to those who give so much. Mr. Alvin Smith brings to a close thirty-eight years of teaching with his retirement this year. During his early years in the profession, Mr. Smith also coached all sports at Lagro, Atwood, and West Township High Schools in Indiana. He has taught social studies here at Niles High School since 1954. Mr. Smith graduated from Andrews, Indiana, Hgh School and obtained his bache- lor ' s degree from Huntington College, also in Indiana, and a master ' s degree from Indiana University. Additional graduate work was done at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. Al; believes that each of his years as a teacher has been highlighted by the outstanding students who have been in his classes. He would " probably " choose to teach if he were choosing a career once again. Al has always adhered to high standards in his academic and citizenshi expectations, and he offers good advice for the students of today and tomorrow: " ... Come to school to learn the basics and take a long look at your values. Be sure you get a return on your investments of time and effort. " Good luck and good wishes go with Al from the staff and students of Niles High. Mr. Smith Page Credit To Dawn Callahan — 197 CO-OP STUDENTS ON THE JOB 1. Many hours of hard work went into the production of your yearbook. Organiza- tion and efficiency were never far from being at their best. Special thanks go to our Advi- sor Mr. Shields, and to Mr. Farr for the several photo- graphic favors he did for us. We are especially appreciative, also, of the patience and under- standing of the faculty and ad- ministration for putting up with our many interruptions and requests.
