In 1923 William Matthews started the first band in Niles H. S. In 1926 L. S. Walker came out with his first moustache. In 1927 Clarence Moore debated with Lorna Eager. Now as man and wife they debate every day. In 1929 Russell Gebby started teaching in Niles. In 1931 Art Mould graduated. In 1932 Joe Hess, Plym Park Golf Pro. grad- uated. In 1947 Miss Charlotte Walker was voted most popular teacher. In 1952 wrestling started. In 1954 Homer Hatcher became first assistant principal. In 1956 we moved to the new high school building. In 1957 Mr. Zabel retired after 23 years as principal. In 1958 Mr. Matthews retired after 36 years. FACULTY He was graduated from Hillsdale College with a BA and from Bowling Green State University with an M S It is with a sense of great pleasure and pride that I address the following comments to the student body and future alumm of Niles Senior H1gh School As an individual member of the Niles Senior High School student body you probably will turn first to the sections of this edition of the Tattler which contain your picture as an individual member of a class and any will turn to the athletic section then the student activi ties department and finally you may look at the faculty d1v1s1on and eventually read these words In a few years this book will be the one visual con tact you have with your high school days and you will remember the fine op ortunities you had in the new high school building ou will recall that the building offered some of the finest facilities avallable to high school students 1n the area and the state It is the hope of the student body the faculty and the community at large that Niles can continue to offer excellent school facilities Th1s can be accomplished MR. STUDENT COUNCIL The Niles Senior High School Student Coun- cil is dedicated to the service of the student body and to the advancement of the school as an edu- cational institution. Through the excellent advis- ing of Mr. Nieboer and through the outstanding support of the student body and administration, the Student Council is able to carry out many worthwhile services. The Student Council handles candy sales. after game dances, car registrations, all auditorium programs, control of all hall trafic, and the organizing and financing of the Student Handbook and the Student Directory. The Coun- cil also sponsors the Homecoming festivities, the Snowball Dance, The Viking Sentinel, school activities, and the Student Government Day activities. The "N" Club is an organization composed of athletes who have won their Major N in a varsity sport. Under the guidance of Mr. Weede and Mr. Stalter, the co-sponsors. the "N" Club strives to promotes better sportsmanship among the athletic representatives of the school. Most of the work of the Club is done in the form of projects. The biggest one is selling concessions at the football and basketball games. Other projects include a movie camera and pro- jector for the athletic department. a bulletin board for the Varsity Room. scales for the wrestling team, a refrigerator for the train- ing room. and a radio for the athletic teams, bus. In the spring. the "N" Club sponsors a banquet for all mem- bers. coaches and their wives. and special guests, The banquet is a fitting end to a year of work. They participate in district and state contests and in June attend a three day camp out. A Parent and Son Banquet at which the awards are presented climaxes the year. The Future Farmers of America is a nation-wide organiza- tion of high school boys. These boys must be enrolled in Vocational Agriculture and carry on a satisfactory Supervised Farming Program. The purpose of the organization is to develop farming ability, leadership, and cooperation in the rural youth of America. The Niles Chapter has a co-operative project, whereby they plant crops to earn money and to get experience in farming. During May, the F.F.A. plans to plant a co-operative project of corn, 15 acres. They also have about twenty-thousand pine and spruce trees. 'T When we are in the hospital. oh, how good those nurses look to us. Thanks to people like Mrs. Goss who sponsors the F.N.A.. girls become interested in this admirable profession. In November, the Future Nurses of America Chapter of Niles Senior High received seventeen new members at their can- dlelight service with replicas of the "Nightingale Lamp." Our programs this year have been varied and most interesting. A picnic started the club's activities and the October meeting was a,trip to the Bronson Methodist Hospital and Nurse's residence in Kal- amazoo. The other meetings were- speakers. two of them were Mrs. Don Ellingsoh, Occupational Therapist at the Exceptional School, and Mrs. Bruce Cook. Medical Technologist. All of the club members are proud of the fact that our senior class members are all applying to nurse's schools. This action completes our program with an air of perfection. At the Pre-School Marching practice the old and the new members learned new steps and reviewed old ones. The band strutted proudly down the field at the half-time ceremonies and helped lead the Vikings on to victory. This year they marched at five home games and at two out of town games. During the remainder of the school year the Concert Band performed several times. One of these performances was the Winter Concert. After the Winter Concert the band members. 49 in all. par- ticipated in the Solo and Ensemble Contest at Coloma. Following the Solo and Ensemble Contest the band participated in the combined Band Bounce and Variety Show. February 27th the band played in the district Band Contest at Benton Harbor. On May 20th the band presented the Spring Concert. During the basketball season the Pep Band played at all the home games. Some activities of the band were a magazine drive last fall and two swimming parties, one on February 18th and the other on March -ith. Mb Tau MEMORIES FROM LAST YEAR The class of 59 had the pleasure of being the first class of students to attend the new Senior High School for its first three years Also last years Seniors were the first class to be honored by having their top students become members of National Honor Society. The student body congratulates Seniors that received this honor. Democratics versus Republicans that was Student Government Day. Everyone worked on his Democratic or Republican committee in hope of victory for his party. On the chosen night the weatherman did not support either party it rained. The rain ruined our posters but it did not dampen our fun or our spirit. The Democrats were especially happy with their landslide victory. The Senior Classs major theatrical production was You Cant Take It With You. This comedy written by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman was under the able direction of Kenneth VanderMeulin. The Seniors of 1959 should have been proud of the splendid acting done by the cast members. The Junior Class honored the graduating Seniors with the 1959 Junior-Senior Prom. The gym was decorated using the theme My Blue Heaven. A golden harp was the center of attraction, and it was an obstacle for everyone to dance around. Queen Tereasa Phelps and King Nate Rice reigned over the evening's festivities. Sadness and happiness, those were the moods for baccalaureate and graduation.
