During my high school career I was intensely interested in reading Halliburton's "Royal Road to Romance." His adventures aroused in me a desire for travel. Then came peace, following the terrible World War II. After the soldiers returned home, it was my privilege to learn much from them of life in the different countries, and thus it was, that India, "the land of enchantmentf, won my visit. One afternoon in 1955 while I was walking by a tourists camp ad miring the beauties of this strange new countrv I saw a rapidlv mov ing automobile strike and fatally 1nJure an old Hindoo woman The camp was deserted save for her and I carried her into a tent hoping that I could do something to lessen her suffering although I saw that she was dying She seemed very grateful for what I did and before she died she placed in my hand a golden obJect in the shape of a mirror but it had no glass She also gave me a stack of very thin glasses and in a last disconnected sentence told me how to use them Soon her traveling com panions came and took charge of the old member of a race famed for its sorcery and I returned to my room determined to learn the future of mv classmates Slip a glass in the frame wish to know the future of some friend and you will see It mirrored within the glass the old Hindoo had said Some what skeptical as to the result I slipped one of the fragile glasses onto the frame thinking at the same time of a classmate Instantly there ap peared a large battleship anchored in the bav off New York and a boat proceeded toward thc shore Then I saw Zeke Colenda now a lieutenant commander The glass melted into nothingness I placed another on the frame and IH it I saw a crowded theater The large audience was gazing intentlv at the screen on which I saw one of America s most populai movie stars Millie Carel Ralph Coley s future did not surprise me at all Combining his practl cal knowledge of newspapers and his amazing knowledge of womankind he had become editor of The Iadzes Home Joanna! The team from the tenth grade was declared the champion teamg the seniors rated second placeg the ninth grade, third, and the eight grade was fourth. The spring months were spent in playing volley ball, also with track and field events. Volley ball was not new to us, but we learned more about the game.
