Niagara College 1977 Digitized by tlie Internet Arcliive in 2015 https : arch i ve . org detai I s n i agaracol I ege 1 977n i ag PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE College life involves many experiences whose impact a Yearbook attempts to capture. The past year was certainly eventful and, I hope, productive for you. Snow blizzards. Celebrate Canada Festival, completion and official opening of the Lundy Merritt building complex, burial of the Time Capsule, and a variety of decennial celebrations all contributed to a greater degree of interest and a feeling of pride in the college ' s accomplishments by students, alumni, employees, advisers, governors and members of the community. This was the year when the Student Council could finally be located in proper facilities, near the largest concentration of students. No doubt, this factor contributed to the success of a very enthusiastic and dedicated Student Council, in planning and promoting a wide variety of activities which have greatly enhanced the quality of student life. I wish you success for the future and trust that, as the years go by, this Yearbook will evoke many pleasant memories of your experiences and the people you came to know during your stay at Niagara. Sincerely, Anthony S. Manera I would like to congratulate the graduating students on their achievements while attending Niagara College. I hope in the years ahead that you will look back on your days at the College as a meaningful and productive experience. This past year has been the nnTost active one that the Niagara Campus has ever experienced. More new student clubs, social functions and musical concerts were presented than ever before. This was entirely due to the excellent efforts of your Student Administrative Council. Graduation need not sever your ties with the College. We may be of continuing service to you even after you have entered the world of work. The College will always be available to provide for your continuing education needs and as we grow, your social and cultural needs as well. As members of the growing Niagara College alumni, congratulations on your past and present achievements and best wishes for future successes. Director of Student Services 4 BRIAN ROHE S.A.C. PRESIDENT I would like to thank all the students who participated in student council events and made this year such a success for us. I would also like to wish all the graduates and students the best of luck in the future and all of us on the student council hope we have helped make your time at Niagara enjoyable. 6 15 16 STUDENTS ' ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL Presents NIAGARA COLLEGE OIt|ristmas Ifformal Saturday, December 10th, 1977 AT CANADIAN LEGION HALL, BRANCH 24 111 Church Street, St. Catharines Music Begins at 9:00 p.m. — Featuring " SPARTAN " Dinner 5:45 p.m. Cash Bar $5.00 per Person KAUFFMAN CAMERAS LTD Complete Line Of: CAMERAS PROJECTORS SALES - RENTALS REPAIRS BUDGET TERMS CHARGEX 735-1212 20 KING (NEAR THE BR106E) MARKARIAN ' S STEAK HOUSE Dining Lounge LIVE LOBSTEB Charcoal Broiled Steaks - Beef Tenderloin - T-Bone Steaks New York Sirloin - Filet Mignon - Surf Turf Charqex - American Express - Diners Club - Master Charge - AAA For Reservations 410 Ontario Open Daily Till Midnight 684-8755 DOMESTIC STORAGE Phone: 732-3444 CROWN MOVING STORAGE Operated By JACK COLES AGENT FOR northAmerican van lines norlhAmerican 229 Plymouth Road Welland, Ontario Hard OX Hardware Building Supplies Ltd. 250 Bunting Road, St. Catharines, Ontario Telephone: 682-2633 Steed Evans Ltd. 1600 CREAM RD., BOX 99 FENWICK, ONTARIO TEL.: 892-2647 " For Water Wash Fans " rScoTT mOTOGRRPHV CREATIVE WEDDING SPECIALISTS PORTRAITS PROMOTIONAL ADVERTISING COMMERCIAL - TEAM PHOTOGRAPHY 368 GENEVA 682-9869 TALLMAN FUNERAL HOMES LTD. They are providing post-secondary students with the type of career education they are seeking and they are providing business and industry with well qualified graduates they require. In 1977 there were over 60,000 full-time post-secondary students enrolled in the Ontario community colleges. Tens of thousands more were enrolled as part-time students in various extension courses, while thousands of others are taking a variety of retraining courses. The growth of Niagara College over the past decade has been nothing short of phenomenal. Since its opening in 1967, Niagara has been meeting the educational needs of the people in the community in an effective and efficient manner. An objective comprehensive evaluation of the college carried out last year indicated that the college was functioning extremely well. What is also gratifying is that the placement record of our graduates has also been outstanding. Niagara College now has thousands of graduates who are employed in numerous service, business, science and technology careers. The administrators, faculty and staff of the School of Applied Arts are proud and gratified to have been associated with the development and growth of the college and to haye provided our contribution to the education of the students. SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Congratulations to the 1978 Graduating Class of the School of Business! This year you join more than 1,039 who have graduated from this School. You will, I am certain, continue to strengthen the fine reputation already earned by your fellow graduates. They are now proving their worth within the business community. The entire staff of this School has assisted in preparing you for your day of graduation. We wish you well. You have been a part of a growing School in which it is hoped you will always be proud. This has been " your school " during your period of study, and we hope you will always think of it in that way. As the number of graduates continues to grow, so does " your school " . From 1967 through 1977, the School of Business has grown from 250 to 757 students, and from 4 to 18 different programs. It has prepared its graduates for entry into a wide variety of interesting positions in the business field. In congratulating the 1978 graduates, may I take this opportunity to express the best wishes of all the staff to the undergraduates. May your continuing stay at Niagara be a rewarding and meaningful experience. Arnot P. PHONE: WINONA 643-1875 BEAMSVILLE 563-7005 92 SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES Some programs in the School of Health Sciences are more visible to the student body than others. You may have seen Ambulance and Emergency Care students, in ' ■■k Bl -S ! ...... Pfauf " " - ' stairwells and elevator of the Simcoe Building i HbI B. HH ' ' f Bk l lHRCMP ' 8 mm practising their use of the stretcher, or in the parking lot practising their ambulance techniques, or extricating people from an old car. The Dental Auxiliary students are well known because of the clinic and the procession of children who troop up there each week. Less evident, to many, are the Nursing Education students who are located in centres in Niagara Falls and St. Catharines and spend a great deal of time in area hospitals. Perhaps you have seen them at special events, such as Open House and the Celebrate Canada Festival checking weight and blood pressure. A group that works quietly behind the scenes are the Health Record students who are preparing for an equally backstage, but very vital career in the records departments of Health Care institutions. The Health Science Preparatory students are planning to enter a variety of career programs and much of their time is spent in the biology and chemistry labs. Even less visible to the day students are those who come in the evenings for a variety of cours es. Then there is the almost totally unseen group of students who take college courses in their own employment locations seeking to upgrade and update their professional skills in a variety of health related courses. Occasionally, they come to one of the campuses for a special workshop and when you see them at a coffee break you may feel that they are outsiders, intruding on the normal daily activities of the College. They too, however, are very much a part of the student group served by the School of Health Sciences and of the total student body of the College. F.
