On that day in vlune. when we receive our diplomas and Mr. Moseleyfs good wishes. we will be stepping from the protection of childhood across the threshold, into, what is for us. the formidable world of adulthood. XY'e would need much more than this one page to list all the people we would like to thank and all the things for which we are grateful at the close of our high school career. So. instead of enumerating, the Class of 1959 would like to dedicate its yearbook, in gratitude. to all those who, in our several years at Newtown. have tried to understand, and to those who have understoodg to the friends we have made: to the friends we might have madeg and to the people we shall always remember: to the things which made us smile and to the things Vvhich made us think. ln years to come we will realize that our high school education wis the foundation on which our futures were built. For the effort which our teachers expended in laying a sound foundation of knowledge, we give our deepest and sincerest thanks. Perhaps you remember back to that first day you came here, how long the dis- tance to graduation seemed. But your high school years have not been long: they have passed swiftly. The years ahead will pass even more swiftly, each year more rapid- ly than the one before. The Roman poet, Horace, summed up the situa- tion in four words: Carpe dienzf fugit bow. QSeize the day: the hour slips awayj Seize the day indeed! Clutch these precious days of youth to you. Make them yield a rich harvest for your later use. Seize them, not in Horaces meaning of the words fEat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we diej, but rather, seize them for the opportunities they will give you and which you will never have again. Wfhether you are college bound or career bound, I sincerely hope that Newtown has prepared you well to make theie next years count, prepared you in mind but especially in heart and in character. My best wishes and the best wishes of all of us who stay behind at Newtown PRINCIPAL go with you. MfAY 1959 ,EW I nuiuurnu-nnumwawuw THE JV WU k AT NEwTowN I Han AN UNEASY FnisL1Nci throughout that first full day of school last t-all. Something was different, strange. Being a creature of steadfast habits who delights in being able to rely on a certain routine day in and out, this ditIerenCC. which I was unable to identify, was very unsettling. Whrlt was changed? What? Then, the second day, as I was walking from my Physics class in room 317. I realized what the difference was. The liact that I was walking quietly, not chasing madly down the stairs to the second floor through the boys' gym, and up the stairs to the other side ot the building, rushing to class breathless and late. Here I was strolling along through the new wing connecting the two old wings ot' the building. I would get to class relaxed and on time. There was another point to ponder. Wheia I sat in class I wasn't dis- tracted by tialling boards, clattering tools, and rasping drills. Everything was serene. This silence was getting on my nerves! Once I overcame my natural aversion to the leisurely strolls and the silence, my curiosity got the better of me, and like the intrepid cat whom it killed, I gave way and decided to investigate this new wing. Far from being killed, I was pleasantly surprised. At tirst I was taken back by the predominance ot' green, cool green halls and dark green blackboards. It occurred to me that all this green had a soothing ehfect and it provided no distraction for the easily distracted. Since I had a few classes in that part ot' the building I had the opportunity to poke and pry at close range. The classrooms appear larger, neater, and brighter. GAZINKQ our OF THE wiNDoW of your classroom you see nothing out of the ordin- ary. The rolling fields stretch out to the horizion. Some are green with rye and some are dark brown where the plow has turned the soil over. The trees in the orchards are in full bloom and lend a beautiful touch to the scene. ln your mind everything is as it should be, but to someone else this scene would be very extraordinary. Why ?-Because you are attending a school in New York City. A farm in a city, that is the Agricultural Annex of Newtown where boys from the various boroughs come to study a unique and adventurous course. Why do they come? The answer is very simple. These boys realize that even in our world of rockets and mis- siles, one cannot overlook the group of people who make up the backbone of our country v-those who are connected with agriculture, The course is a difficult one and only the finest survive. Each boy is required to spend three summers on farms in New York State where he can obtain actual experience in farm work. These summers away from families and friends are a great influence on the boys. They broaden their outlook on life and build worthwhile characteristics. The boys receive an academic diploma upon completion of the course. In addition to agriculture they must take physics, chemistry, history, and mathematics which makes the course just as hard, or even harder, as any other. Looking through the window again, we find the scene has changed. Housetops have taken the place of the rolling fields and instead of the blooming orchard we see a Rest of television antennae. We are now seniors. We are in the last lap of the course which has brought us to the main building. But we cannot push the memories of the annex from our minds. The noisy cafeteria, which magically became an assembly hall once a week, and which on those special nights became our own Latin Quarter, still echoes with the sounds of the untuned piano, the rich alto voice of Miss Torresola, later joined by the dramatic bass tones of Dr. Barclay, and the almost perfect harmony of our own Rock 'ii Rollers, the the Gems. Boys, l'm very happy to announce' '.,. coming out of the little box on the wall was a familiar sound and the words that followed usually made us proud that we were aggies. But soon we will be looking out of another window and again see a completely dif- ferent scene. The campus, the capital buildings, the skyscrapers and the l'.1rmste.1ds will be our new environments. 'lhe agricultural course has acquainted its students with all phases of agriculture. From Newtown eight percent will go further in this held. Many will attend universities and become veterinarians, teachers, agricultural engineers, and dedicated research workers. Still others will graduate from institutes and become frozen foods experts, dairy technologists, and horticultural specialists. And last, but not least, some will become men upon whom all our lives depend, farmers. As we look out of the windows in our futures, our thoughts will return to the win- dows of Newtown and memories will till our mindsgmemories which can never be for- gotten. And we will thank you, Newtown, you and your wonderful teachers, for the line training you have given us. We will thank you because you have prepared us for the' many hardships and responsibilities we have faced and will be facing. Even now, we thank you. Tonight January 20, 1979 we are about to witness a heartwarming reunion of Mr. jan Grad and the graduating class of january '59. Mr. Grad has been waiting behind stage. He has been brought here by Robert T. Lauri, who, you all know, is a prominent entertainer, and the well known politician, james M. This Is Your Life- Oh4 Oh my goodness! He seems to have fainted. Is there a doctor in the house? Yes, here comes Dr. Meir Meiberg and his able nurse assistants, Nancy Crane and Annette Ferro. Smelling salts seem to be doing the trick. Yes, he is coming around line. Wliile he is recovering from shock, we will have a word from our sponsor. Business men-do you need an able secretary to do all your office work? If you do, consult with Kerry Goonan, the President of the National Agency for Secretaries. Alice Marron and Mary Ann Gousheski are now working at the U.N. Some of his other well known secretaries are Diana Doyle, Anthy Manos, Betty Manos, Virginia Trentino, Rosalie Chiano, Nina Di Nozzi, Anita Rogers and Marsha Welt. Now back to Clara and Cynthia. I hope you are feeling better now. Mr. Grad, see if you can recognize these voices. Jan-you sat near me in English. Remember those spelling tests . . . 7' jan-I was in your English class, too, 4th row Sth seat, in fact. Thomas Martin and james Vercruysse, I think you stumped him. Tom, by this card I see you're a construction worker, and James, you're an engineer. I hope you enjoy your work. I hate to rush you off like this but you'll have much more time to talk at the reunion dinner at Nick Pontikas' Newtownia Restaurant. Incidentally, two of the head chefs down there are Artie Carrano and Humbert Fabbro. There will also be a few songs from the French Ambassador, ,Ianick Gueguen. The Marie Napoli Dancers including Marie Napoli, Mary johnson and Marilyn Muller, will put on a few of their dances for us, Miss Helen Sydoruk will play her most outstanding number, The Alma Mater. 6 . s fi, ' ,. ZLTNNO Newman Club 91 U15 SENIDR' HEART cllnrfb .illzerial r1j'1l11r'ermfin1r fo forepb Adclimzzj Fmt THIQ PAST Fifw YEARS I have been giving serious thought to performing an ex- periment which might just possibly supply the answer to the one question that has been uppermost in all students' minds-f XXfhat makes a senior? To satisfy my Curiosity I took it upon myself to operate on the part of the human body where I would most likely find the answer. Thus, I decided to perform a dissection of the heart of a typical senior, a Newtown senior. After weighing this seniors heart carefully in my hand, I discovered it to be ex- traordinarily heavy with thoughts about the unknown which lies ahead. Upon examining it under a microscope, I saw that it was composed of many tiny cells, some deeply scar- red and others in perfect condition, By bringing the lens closer to the scarred tissues, I was able to see the imprints that the work and worries of the last four years had left upon them. The remaining tissues proved to be those which specialized in recording the pleas- ures of the Newtown senior-the dances, dates, basketball and soccer games and other extra-curricular activities which a Newtown student enjoys. These, by far, outnumbered the former. One thing I found, which was most surprising, was that all blood vessels. whether they were entering or leaving the heart, came to be connected with the mind and mouth of this senior, His every word, sometimes biting, but most of the time sincere. came directly from his heart, a most amazing thing for a hardened scholar like the individual on whose heart I was operating! I also discovered that the tiny nerve passageways which were concentrated about the area of this heart all originated in the brain, This fact proves that the Newtown senior's emotions are not merely based on his sense of sight, but are, after twelve years of training, processed by the mind and then conveyed to the sensitive instrument called the heart. Upon probing further into the muscle, I struck a tender spot and came to the con- clusion that I must be nearing the center, or somewhat untouched area of the organ. Whcrri I had peeled back the final wrapping which protected the heart's core, I knew! I had just made one of science's most startling discoveries! For, there in the center lay the images of three items most dear to the heart of every Newtown senior. My experi- ment was a success! The first image proved to be a rectangular card which, on closer inspection, was recognized as a ticket to the Senior prom. Following that came a blue robe-like garment and a scjuare headdress, the graduation cap and gown. Last, but not least, appeared a neatly rolled scroll, decorated with a yellow seal, which read across the top in capital lettersfDlPI.OMf-X. They have rejoined the Spanish Club, French Club, Debating Club, Tennis Club, Archaeology Club, Band, Cheerleaders, Choir, Chemistry Lab Squad, Visual Aids Squad and Library Squad in order to get their pictures in The Neirmzzvzer and to get enough service to graduate. However, this scene is not all peaches and cream because the poor seniors are laden down with senior rings, senior hats and senior buttons, and their poor faces are stiff from walking around with that senior expression fthat young, fair and debonair lookj all year. Their pockets are empty after paying for prom bids, senior dues, senior hats, senior rings, senior buttons and senior yearbooks. They have learned a great deal in their four years at Newtown, and they may even have absorbed some of their studies, but now the time has come for those seniors to take leave of Newtown. All that remains for them to do is to pass the English regents and dispose of their escalator and swimming pool passes. This is the story of the rise from freshmen to seniors of the class of 1959. Newtowners have stood behind their teams through thick-and-thin. Our basketball team, although rarely in contention for the league lead, has consistently played to overflow crowds. Our soccer team, always one of the high-sports on our athletic calendar used to play to empty bleachers. These past two seasons, however, we have begun to consider the possibility of building more seats at The Field to accommodate the crowds that now attend our soccer matches. These are just a few examples of the support Newtown students have given their teams. There are many others. In our four years at Newtown, we have never enjoyed a championship team, but we never had a squad that didnt give its utmost to boost the honor of the school. The following is your four-year resume of sports at Newtown. 1955 - 1956 Our freshman year at Newtown was a year of contrasts. We had some striking successes, but we also had our share of failures. Our soccer team played up to its standards and ended the season with a line second place finish. Amazingly enough, the soccer team was scored upon in only three games all season. Unfortunately, Grover Cleveland accomplished this feat twice and eventually captured the league title, Captain Ted Georgious was named on the first team of the All-City P.S.A.I.. squad and both Ramon Garcia and Tony Ljuba captured second team nominations. This years basketball team was a forewarning that lean years were coming to Newtown in this sport. The squad accumulated a sorrowful record and ended with undisputed possession of fifth place fwho would care to dispute it?J. The games were generally close due to the fine all-around play of Captain Arty Stephan, but it was a truly rare occasion when Newtown captured a contest. The track team, another of Newtownls consistently strong squads, continued its fabulous assault on the rest of the city. Under the guidance of Mr. Thomas Foran, the track appearances of the Pioneers proved to he spectacular. Featuring such stars as Frank Allen, Edmond Leuken, William Gardner, Ellis Butler, and Vince Leone, the relay team made of? with such coveted championships at the Queensboro P.S.A.L. track meet, and the tremendous competitive Penn relays. The season pro- vided many fine individuals and all around team performance. fc'rMllHZ11cfL2' rm uexf fugej 151 cfs- yhvi .a-Q.. ..- nf ,vw-,aaa-y f Qi H , 'TQ ,gif GW' L. lse- , V Jw: i 'a . sc aw 4 ' ,,,,,f-Q. a- .ae 7 Yi- QQ K rg .a I 'fa A 3 - C sg f X Zi F 1 X X? is f at w irq, W' . The Soccer team, riddled by graduation placed a creditable third in the standing. Its record of 7-5 included four games, that were lost by one goal. We did, however, compile four shutouts this season. The standards on the team were Declan Quigley and Danny Mittler. Both were hne scorers and competitors. The Bowling team followed with a very impressive sophomore season. We finished in a two-way tie for second place, and very nearly emerged as champions. The leading bowlers were Pat Tripp and Dick Perilli who were both named to the All-Queens aggregation. Basketball was the next sport to arrive on the scene. The team opened the season in its patent fashion, losing its first five games. Astoundingly, the team completely reversed itself by winning its next five games, and nine of their last eleven. This enabled us to secure fourth place in the league standings with a 9-7 record. Our victories included a startling upset of the Borough Champions Forest Hills quintet and stood as the Rangers lone setback of the season. Newtown's standouts on this tivesome were Carlton Brooks and Cooky Pellegrino. The track team failed to impress for the first time in many years. The team weakened by a mass graduation of Pioneer starters, tried hard but accomplished little. The leading sprinters on the squad were Dave Horn, Richard Robbins, Richard Scheer, and Douglas Tuchman. 1957-1958 Most of our teams performed creditably in our junior year. Our bowling season was highlighted by an upset victory of City Champs Bayside by a game-fighting Newtown team. Among the stars on this squad were Al Eigen, Al Gibbons, Don Hartman, and Marty Witssermaia, Our soccer team coached by Doc. Barclay finished in third place behind City Champs Cleveland and second place Bryant. The pioneer booters compiled a line 7-Z record losing only to scoring forward Declan Quigley and by goalie Al Lorenz. Both of these players made the All Queens Soccer Team. Our basketball team did not fare as well as the soccer team, Newtown's cagers closed out their season with a poor -I-10 slate. The team was very inexperienced and was composed predominantly of juniors. Rudy D'Amico received honorable mention on the All Queens Basketball Team. The track team just couldnt get out of its blocks. Always seeming ripe for that upset, the team just couldn't do it. Ernie Vlahakis and Humbert Fabbro were out- standing. 132 The baseball team started like a house on fire, swapping its first three games. It then slumped momentarily losing its next two games. The team still had a good chance of winning the North Queens Championship but lost a clutch game to Cleveland and just played out the rest of the season. The highlight of this baseball season was Rudy D'Amico's Perfect Game, pitched against Queens Vocational. The handball team was as usual our best and more consistent team and finished in second place in the league standings. Our record was 11-3. The team was spear- headed by Captain Fred Wfeiss, Roy Nardin, john Bason, and Martin Steinbeck. The tennis team, under Mr. Ralph Brown's tutelage, had a fair season. Starring were Arthur Kriesworth, Ken Chernow, and Richard Ellenport. The golf team struggled through another mediocre season. Dave Lieberman layed su erblv. P . P . 1958 - 1959 This season has started off in a creditable fashion regarding most of the teams, but due to early press commitments the spring schedule will be impossible to report. Newtowns soccer team played up to its usually high standard, and only after an overtime loss to Champs Cleveland, did we finish in second place. This being Doc Barclays last season as Newtowns soccer coach, we had hoped to present him with a championship. XY'e came very close. Forwards Frank Minichini and Donald Socci, defenseman Fl-:un Bright and goal, Al Lorenz, all deserve special commendation. The bowling team placed a respectable fourth in the league standing. En route to this record. however. we did beat last years City Champs, Bayside. Five members of the team finished with above 150 averages. They were: Gary Thompson, Ronnie Voltz, Richard Crowdy. Bob Grimmer, and Steve Liss. Newtowns track team performed adequately. Many of its members are lower termers. thereby increasing our hopes in the coming years. Basketball, always the most rousing, exciting sport at Newtown, was no different this year. Though we placed no higher than fourth, with an 8,8 record, c-very game the team played was a tense battle. Nat Smith, Captain Richie Quarto, and Henry Williams starred. The cheerleaders, Newtown's most awaited sport ensemble, once again performed with their usual talent. Captain of the Cheerleaders, Flo Newman and Captain of the Cheering Squad, Irene Golub, must be commended. This is the sports story through the four years that we have attended Newtown. I have immensely enjoyed watching Newtown teams perform in both winning and losing causes. I have always been proud of my team and school. I hope you have also. Success and Happiness to everyone. You won't tell us how old you are? Vain, eh? Well, that won't be necessary, for we're interested in your past four years. Let's see noweoh, yes, when you received this fortunate group, you were having your face lifted Qstop denying it, you know it's truelj, and since the renovations were near completion, the students were on single session. Lunch was eaten in the small gym, then the substitute for a cafeteria. Funny how the potato chip wrappers, candy wrappers, and pretzel boxes were found stuffed in classroom desks throughout the building! About this time there also was another substitute at work. Do you remem- ber how your P.A. system was used for classroom assemblies because Dillingham Hall had not yet been completed? The second half of this class' Freshman year came in full bloom with its many new changes and ideas, one of the most prominent being the inauguration of your Honor School by your Principal, Mr. Francis S. Moseley. It was also in this term that tentative arrangements for the reconstruction of your old wing were begun. Yes, Newtown, you were going to be remodeledg this job was to be completed in 1957 Qwe know betterj. They were still Freshman at the time, recuperating from their finals, when the news came that two members of your History Department, Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Platt, were co-authors of a history book, Our World Through The Ages -another mark on your list of achievements. The remaining part of that term went by fast and before they knew it, September 1955 had rolled around, and your student body eagerlyf ?j returned, anxiousf ?j to begin the new term, Since your reconstruction had already begun, there were double sessions, They were now Sophs, and took advantage of the fact that they were able to sleep later in the mornings since both they and the Freshies had the afternoon session. Your library was moved to the Annex across the street. Teachers always wondered why it took their students twenty minutes to get from the first floor in the main building to the library directly across the street! fYes, sir, that's the Newtownite techniquelj However, there is one thing we can say for your students that term of September '55, Because of their ardent adoration for schooling tor was it for the teachers?j, they maintained an exceptional attendance record of 94.-LQ which distinguished you as the top school in attendance for New York City. The remainder of this term was relatively tranquil, but before its conclu- sion came the excitement Qsomehow it never remains quiet here for longlj. You had once more made the news. Upon coming close one of the little devils spied a big square bottle with that golden color, but another saw Renate Hamburger, and off he galloped with the rest of the boys in hot pursuit. Pulling up to a stop, Herb Rittger lightly bounded off his horse, and breathing a sigh of relief planted both feet firmly on the ground. With a great sweep of his hand, Herb dolfed his new 9 JMLXIOOW, gallon hat fwhich by the way was designed by Mike De Angelis and can be purchased for only 310.98 at honest Harvey Gold- berg's general storej. While Herb was engaging himself in friendly chatter with Miss Renate he suddenly heard from behind a hissing sound. Herb was horrihedl With one quick pass at his gun, which incidently failed because his hand went by it too fast, he turned around and looked for the snake. Oh, it's you boys! One of them came to Herb and whispered quite loudly, Listen, boy, how about an intro? And with a grin Herb did what he had tried to put OH. As you can tell by their names theyre poison for nice girls like you, so let's leave them and go inside by ourselvesfl As they stepped forward to go into Vito Policastro's saloon, the Lucky Hula Hoop, the three lovers fell right into step behind them and, through the swinging doors, they proceeded. Inside, the place was racked with noise. From an old B. Dzubak piano, the boys could just make out the image of Ronnie Volz, his shirt open and sleeves held up by Susan Shatz's safety pin, banging out a new tune by Allen Steir titled, Once in Love with Barbara is Enough. Pushing their way across the crowded floor they finally reached the bar. And with a dry shout, Bad Boy ordered sarsaparilla for the house. But from one of the backtables Aida Pauletich retorted Make mine ginger ale. All right, ginger ale for the little lady in the back, answered the bartender, James Minkalis. All over, joy reigned supreme. Men were slapping each other on the back and silly girls were giggling for no apparent reason. Then from the stage a voice bellowed Qthat's right it's Frank Battistaj, Lad-ies and gen-tle-men for your enjoyment we have for you tonight some really, really swing- ing hips. Yes, we will hold right here on our stage a hula hoop contest. Applause, applause. Okay, boys, as soon as you get down otf the stage we can begin. Wfhat do you mean, 'begin with you on stagef You don't think I trust you two, do you? Everyone knows the reputation of Tony Pendarxis and Al Lorenz as the biggest flirts in town. Care to deny it, boys? Thought not. K K All right, girls, come on out and l'll introduce you. Applause. i'Here we have Cheer Her 'Til You're Hoarse 'ludy Cfurci, l Use Cfharles Autell Wfamla Hassel and Are You Ready Girls Florence Newman. I believe Miss Newman has consented to start our contest. Miss Newman, are you ready? Okay, girls, let's go! Both Judy and Florence were having no trouble, but Wanda's hair kept throwing her olf balance and she had quite a bit ot trouble. So, john Young started to work on this problem. Soon, after much calculation john came to this revolutionary conclusion, l V Cut ott your hair. XY anda dropped out of the contest. After two and a half hours, the contest was halted because three of the men in the audience were taken out cross-eyed because they had tried to follow the little hoop. It s too bad it had to happen to such nice boys as Tom Foley, Richie Grame and Howie Abadinsky. Oh well, boys, there'1l be another contest next week. Then from the stage Frank Battista was starting to introduce the next act. And now we have the ever lovin' beauty, that bomb shell out of KC., Miss Bonnie . . . Listen, Marzocco, I know you're here, Robertson interrupted. . . . Rothman being accompanied by Vito ...' ' Frank went on. I am not. answered Marzocco. ' '.... DiFranco playing the sax, finished Frank. I see you. so stop trying to be funny! said Robertson. This is one of the biggest feuds in history-the Lenny Marzocco-Walter Robertson fued. It is comparable to those between the candy coated chocolate and the ordinary messy chocolate and that biggest one of all, the aspirin and the butlerin. Robertson was shouting at the top of his lungs, accusations of no apparent sense. Then it happened , . . they started for each other! But since Lenny was at one end of the room and XY'alter at the other. it took them some time to cross the floor. The saloon manager. Phil Monaco. was scared silly ot' their ruining the place and he was running around. in and out of tables, shouting for help and pleading with the boys not to tight. At this point. two boys. Guido de Rossi and Louis Silber came between them and with mugs of cactus juice lifted high in the air they asked, Who put those I., eight great tomatoes in that little bitty canf Lenny and Xwalter were so stunned by this question that they forget about their light and arm in arm walked through the swinging doors trying to figure out the answer to this earth-shaking question. Out of the saloon they walked over to Doc Sieglers ollice where they found him dictating a message to Linda Van Berkom, his secretary, As the boys came in, Dennis Rosensweig, the town yet. was complaining that he had caught pyorrhea from eating too many of Eleanor Caldwells home baked pies. Without even looking up, the Doc told him not to worry and to go home. A waiting patient, Nathan Smith, was amazed at this and asked Doc, Aren't you worried? Doc Siegler replied, What, me worry ? Zfinff1gc'l98O vital question about the can of tomatoes. After much thought Doc Siegler decided it must have been Peter Listro because he was always interested in tomatoes of all kinds. But not being satisfied with this answer, they walked over to the New Town X-Ray office to ask editor, Nancy Moore, if she had anything on record. Nancy and Virginia Ustaszewski looked it up in the files, but all they found that even came close to tomatoes was the fact that Steve Grossman had once consumed seven pizza pies in one night, And while that wasn't what they were looking for it was still a big feat. Being very much dissatisfied, the boys went across Grimmer Road. This road, by the way, was named for the founder of our town, Robert Grimmer. Going over to the druggist to seek their answer, they met Marsha Washington of whom they asked that same question. But she had no answer. Her only idea was that maybe it was Howard Rosenberg. She said this because it struck her that he was always cramming and so why not cram tomatoes in a little bitty can? But this answer just didn't seem right. Inside, druggist Michael Proper, got very mad when asked the question, and he said that his schooling included nothing about tomatoes. But he did have an ointment in a little bitty tube that was made from seven tomatoes and put out by William Kroll and Co. This whole thing was getting pretty tiresome so the boys sat down on the edge of the sidewalk to think. Across the street Edvige Agostinelli and Evelyn Mickelson, who own the A' La Mode Dress Shop, waved to them but they were so engrossed in their problem they didn't notice. All of a sudden a gust of wind blew a piece of paper to their feet. Walter picked it up and started to crumble it when he notice it was an advertisement with a picture of a tomato. It read, See the old wild west doctor, Vincent Civello, whose magic cure made fron1 eight .... The sheet was ripped oif and the other part wasnt to be found. Over at George Themann's stage coach olhce the boys inquired about this Doc Civello, but no one had ever heard of him, Outside the office a big crowd was forming around a covered wagon. Step right up, folks, and buy some of my miracle cure .... 1 rsenic mixed with eight of them, yelled the man who later turned out to be Civello. Guido rushed up to the wagon and in a breathless voice asked, Are you the man who puts those eight great tomatoes in that little bitty can ? Yes son, he drawled. l am. At last we know the answer. And now we can bring our story to a close. As the flaming sun sinks deep into the horizon, the silhouette of a covered wagon full of children is seen rumbling away. It's so big and there are so many floors and rooms and stairways and so many kids and teachers. At first, I couldn't find my sec- tion, so I asked three kids-two laughed right in my face, and the third directed me to the wrong end of the building. September 5, 1955 September 9, 1955 Had 11 ferrible e.x'periem'e fnefay. Two girls in gym offered to show me to the swimming pool. I followed them through a couple of doors, a locker room, and then they said the pool was just through the glass door ahead of me. Opening the door, I went in, and before I knew what was happening, I found myself inside a shower, and cold, wet water was pouring down on me, and the door was stuck so I couldnt get out. I screamed my head otf and finally the gym teacher let me out. She asked who did it to me, and just as I was about to point to the two girls, some kind friend whispered to me that they were Seniors. All of a sudden, I remembered that Dad always tells me: Silence is golden. Anyhow, I was excused from classes for the rest of the day because I was so wet. 0Ct0b0l' 19, 1955 Had ez had accident in arf flair. Accidentally, I knocked over a chair which knocked over the paint table, oh' which fell all the paints. I apologized, of course, but I guess that didn't do any good because I had to come back after 5:00 and clean the mess up. It really wasn't my fault, so why is the art teacher so angry with me? ???? November 18, 1955 Tbey're bezzfifzg some kind of tertr next week called mixed terms, or mid-terminals-some thing like that. Must be something special because we have to take them in special rooms on special days. If I have any spare time, maybe I'll study a little extra for them. The teacher said he didn't think the experiment served its purpose. December 20, 1956 Went ufifb ez group of kids' lo ibe bizineetball game. Had a swell time. The cheerleaders were super, the music at intermission was cool, and most of all, the team played a swell game. It was the proctor-not just any proctor, but that art teacher who gave me so much trouble in my Freshman year. just what do you think you're doing? he roared. I told him. He looked at me real suspicious-like, and sneered: Go ahead and sneeze. Not all the icicles in Alaska could have made me sneeze. Then he looked inside my purse, and what did he find, but some papers. containing theorems, which I had been studying before the test. I don't have to tell you what this teacher was thinking. And still no sneeze would come. Then I remem- bered a sensitive spot on the second freckle of the three on my left arm. After scratching it real hard, sure enough, I started to sneeze, so much in fact, that I couldnt stop. The proctor was stupified-he didnt know what to think. Poor guy! September 12, 1957 This nmrrzmg ff. i',i- 24121 ir terrible. It's dark when you get up, and it's still a little dark when you leave for school. Then you're accused of leaving your Spanish book home on purpose, when actually you thought you picked up your Spanish book, but it really was your Chem. book. Then to make matters worse, you're accused of coming to school slop- pily dressed because you have two different socks on. I tell you, it's a losing battle. May 16, 1958 Neufaun held iff mzzzual Spring Concert loday, and as usual, it was quite a success. The band had its problems though. The tuba-player fell asleep in a dark corner backstage. When a friend finally located him, it was way past time for the opening number. Then the poor guy couldnt find his mouthpiece for the tuba. What good is a tuba without a mouthpiece? Worse yet, what good is the band without a mba? However, he found it, and the performance went off simply swell. This concert was to be the last one which would be led by George Schoettle, the kind and beloved conductor of the Band. June 21, 1958 Went u-rfb tz bznzt-lv of kidr fo lite ,Hall af Forerl Park to see the Senior class graduate. just about a year from now, our class will be in their spot. Gee, I can hardly wait . . . or can I? September 8, 1958 Ar I lake pen in band Ia urile Ibrr entry, I am now a full-pledged Senior. The new wing of the building is finally completed. You won't believe this, but now there are real hall- ways we can use. It's wonderful not having to be carried through Tech Alley and the boys gym by mobs of kids. The library is beautiful-a truly fine addition to our Alma Mater. Unfortunately, however, space was provided for an absence office. I was hoping they'd forget about that. I can't figure out why they put sound-proof walls around the band practice room though. Getting back on a regular 8:30-2:50 schedule really provides plenty of time for extra- curricular activities and home-basketball attendance. Everyone was dressed in brown, and wore buttons, ribbons, and what-not in his honor. The singing of Hail, George Brown to the time of our school song, could be heard ringing through the hallways from his Physics classrooms. Some lowly lower-termers in- nocently asked: Who's George Brown ? Ma question to which no senior gave a com- pletely truthful answer. Thus, these Children were led to believe that he could be anybody from the guy who makes the potatoes in the cafeteria to the fellow who tunes the piano in Dillingham Hall. Actually, there are no words this humble reader can think of, which would truly express the cafeteria situation. Trying to get in and out of the place depends solely upon how strong you are, or, in some rather unfortunate cases, how strong you aren't. To make matters worse, a cake sale was held in the cafeteria today. Trying to get to the tables to buy one single, solitary piece of cake was almost as bad as lighting half the subway crowd at rush-hour. A few individuals got the original idea of crawling under the tables to get to the cake sale area. However, this idea did not exactly meet with the teachers' approval. It wasn't hard to tell who had been successful in the quest for a piece of cake-their faces would be smudged with chocolate or strawberry icing, or dotted with powdered sugar. December 12, 1958 Right fhir mizzzlfe, the mzzmal Sarnia Hop if being held, up in the boys gym. Section was little short of a panic today. All the kids who didn't have tickets for the dance, and wanted one, were trying to get some. There were others who had tickets, but didn't want them anymore, and were trying to sell them, but didn't know to whom. Kids were run- ning around from one section to another, a few trying to sell tickets, but most were trying to buy one. A few were lucky. The majority wasn't. l'm one of the majority. February 2, 1959 Today um the the jim! day of fhe neu' term iz! Ixlezrmzwz. The days ahead are going to be pretty busy ones. There will be final decisions to make about college, the miserable Senior dues to pay, qualification tests and final Regents to worry about, and of course, the Senior activities to participate in. The prom will probably be a very dreamy atliair. Then of course, there's graduation itself-but l guess that'll come quick enough, without thinking about it now. How will we ever be able to say 'good-bye' to all the teachers and friends we've made in these past years? Gosh, but it was fun. And how the time Hew! I hope this last term goes more slowly than the rest have. Everyone seems to be counting the days 'till we receive our Senior hats. How I used to resent those big Seniors parading up and down the hallways in their hats and sunglasses. Now, I suppoge I'11 bg one of them, and there will probably be plenty of kids who will resent me. Let them! Some day, they'll be in our shoes, or rather, in our hats. After various 'straightenings-up have moved it from room to room and table to table. someone will decide to put it away and deposit it in a seldom opened desk drawer or the top shelf of some closet. You will, in general have seen the last of The Nea'- tozuzer for quite awhile. Then. one day someone will mention a name, or you will read a name in a news- paper, and you will wonder whether the name belongs to the person you knew in World History 5 Cuthe one who always argued with the teachernj or in Music Q the one with the beautiful voice' J. Perhaps you will be house-cleaning, or packing to leave, and come upon The Neztfozuzei' by accident and be forced by a mass of vague recollection to put faces to names and names to faces and to read it page by page again. You will read the names of the people who wished you Luck and Success and Love and Happiness and sometimes wished them for you For Always, and you will try to remember the last name of Bob D. who also signed himself parenthetically Master of Math , fXY'as that sarcasm or egotism?j Then you will wonder whether you had ever added ironically after your own name Phys Wizz . Likenesses of your former classmates will smile glossily at you and you will try to remember how they looked when they were not smiling. You will come to your own photograph, and study it for awhile, attempting to remember something concrete about that person who was you as a high school senior, and whether that person was happier or unhappier than you are at the moment. But because that is a stupid, pointless question, and because the answer will make no difference in anything, you will make yourself stop thinking about it, and close the book, with a mental note to show it to your family and friends again, and tell them about some of the great, really great times, you had in high school.
