Foreign Language Students Participate in Language a With the addition of new teacher Mrs. Linda Daniel, the foreign language department had a complete roster of teach- ers this year. Mrs. Daniel came to Newton after attending college at Emporia State. She taught French 1, 2, and 3, with five classes daily. The Spanish students, under the teaching of Mrs. Maria Chaple, were active. Some of the students participated in the Mexican Independence Fiesta. The Fiesta, correlating with the Newton Centennial, had many Spanish students from Newton High participating in dancing and singing por- tions of the programs on Main Street and in Lindley Hall. The program was held in early September. The Latin classes, under the teaching of Mrs. ,Patricia Randall, worked on semester projects during the first semes- ter. The projects were miniature replicas of the tools or utensils used by Romans in everyday life. All of the foreign language students took part in Language Day at McPherson College November 12. The day consisted mainly of singing and talking with students from other schools in the Southwestern Kansas area. French 1 students, pictured below, led by Mrs. Daniel, sing songs in their first hour class. The songs help the students become more familiar with the French language. Social Studies Team Teaching Introduced at . American history classes experimented with a new form of teaching this year called team teaching. It consisted of the three American history teachers lecturing at one time or another in each class. Although class size was increased to about fifty students per class, team teaching appeared to be a success. Because of its success in the social studies area, other departments at NHS may also adopt this method in the future. Field trips to Kansas University, Wichita, and Kansas City highlighted the year's activities for students enrolled in Humanities classes. On these trips they toured museums and art galleries containing articles and information on the sub- ject matter that they were studying. The annual government day was held at the Court House for students taking government. The day long session en- abled students to participate in governmental activities and to gain a better knowledge of our Harvey County government. ' In Psychology students observed the many aspects of human behavior in varied environments. International Rela- tion students divided up into six countries and carried on world affairs among the nations. i,i'liROi'ia I Senior Debbie Kutz points out the communist countries in Asia as Steve Wance looks on in World History.
