Secretaries and Monitors New System uts Absences A new attendance system cut down on absences and tar- dies this year. Mrs. Raylene Woolsey was hired as attend- ance secretary to check and record absences under the new system. Mrs. Erletta Weyend, secretary to Mr. Bernard Scheer, principal, handled correspondence, kept files on all stu- dents, and recorded all student grades on the permanent files. She aided with enrollment and helped students. Monitors assisted Mrs. Weyend and Mrs. Woolsey in the office and ran errands for the teachers. Mrs. Lois Davis, bookkeeper, was given her own office this year on second floor. Mrs. Davis kept the books and handled the money as financial secretary. Mrs. Gladys Ediger, library secretary, supervised in the absence of Mrs. Gladys Niles, regular librarian. She did offi- cial typing, processed and catalogued books. Mrs. jean Schroeder continued as guidance office secre- tary. Mrs. Schroeder worked mornings only. Secretary to Mr. Scheer, Mrs. Weyend. and at- tendance secretary. Mrs. Woolsey, SEATED, work together in the main office. gl Typing and processing cards are two of the duties Mrs. Ediger performs as library secretary. She also helps students with reference work during school hours. Guidance office secretaryMrs. Schroeder, STANDING, works in the l C., Cf, mornings only. Mrs. Davis, bookkeeper, works in her office in the teachers' lounge on second floor. Fifth hour monitors Mike Sadowski. Bruce McCandless, and Alan Green look over the shoul- der of Mrs. Woolsey while Mrs. Weyend answers the telephone. iw.. l

Vice-principal and Counselors New Vice principal Is Athletic Director Mr Bill Brown vice principal was new to Newton High School this year He was in charge of disciplinary act1on and served as athletic director Mr Brown came to Newton from Washington High School Kansas City Kansas This was Mr Brown s eleventh year of teaching Mr Brown started the wrestling program at Washington H1gh School and coached three years of football Previously he had coached football basketball and track at Horton High School Horton Kansas He was at Washington for eight years and taught industrial arts and driver s education Mr Brown has his Bachelor of Science degree and his Masters degree in industrial education from Pittsburg State Teachers College He IS only six hours from meeting the requirements for a Specialist degree in administration Counselors at Newton High School were Mr Alden All baugh and Mr Michael Biberstem Working together Mr Allbaugh and Mr Biberstem strove to help students know themselves and better understand their own thoughts They also helped to improve communication between student and teacher Mr Allbaugh and Mr Biberstein kept students 1n formed on career and job opportunities and new training facilities They dealt with the personal and social problems of the students also The counselors kept information avail able on colleges to make it easier for students to make col lege choices Mr Brown vice principal is new to Newton High School this year He serves as athletic director and has charge of disciplinary action 1 1 . 7 ' 1 a 7 ' ' , . Mr. Brown came to Newton from Washington High School in Kansas City, Kansas. -..,,Q.-N Counselors are Mr. Allbaugh and Mr. Biberstein. They work together to assist students with problems. They also arranged for Newton students to attend a college day at Hutchinson in November.

N H--we L... 1 Principal S S' i Principal HelpsUniteStudents In his third year as principal of Newton High School, Mr. Bernard Scheer has done much to unite the students. Mr. Scheer was always willing to listen to the students andtheir suggestions concerning activities and curriculum in the plans for the new high school. He said that he was glad to see the students join ,into one group as a school to attain their goals rather than separaterinto sophomore, junior, or senior groups. Mr. Scheer said that this. improv'ed the atmo- spheref, Upon receiving suggestions from the students, the administration is considering offering German in the foreign language department and a gymnastics course for both boys andgirls. The students of Newton High need someone to turn to in time of need, whether it be a problem concerning school or not. Mr. Scheer has always been' that someone. He has bond- ed the students of NHS together. p Mr. Scheer talgestime out to aid Clif Overholt in sending out slips to the differentclasses. Mr. Benard Scheer, principal of Newton High has helped unite the lriculum.
