LANGUAGE ARTS Sophomores write short stories Sophomore English classes made a study of both literature and grammar. Composition was practiced by these classes by writing short sto- ries and term papers. The novels TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and SILAS MARNER were read by the sophomore classes. juniors read several novels including RED BADGE OF COURAGE and HUGKLEBERRY FINN. Group discussions, book reports, and a further study of grammar rounded out the ju- nior English program of study. Senior English students enrolled in either College Prep or General English IV. The Col- lege Prep classes studied novels including THE BEAR and NOON WINE. These classes also learned a new style of tranformational gram- mar. The General English classes made a review of grammar and had group discussions on books and stories studied by the class. MA UAL ARTS Students gain new talents Two new classes were added to the Manual Arts Department this year. Transportation, taught by Mr. Franz, dealt with the mechanics of traveling apparatus. The other new class, Light Construction, was taught by Mr. Funk. This class dealt with building furniture and the processes entailed in constructing buildings. A new teacher came to the department this year. Mr. Benninga taught Mechanical Draw- ingI,lI, and Other courses offered in this department were Woods and Crafts. These courses offer students a chance to learn new skills with their hands by constructing small projects. RON SUNDQUIST, Drawing III student, works on the floorplan of a building which he designed.
