Howard returned to full- time action in the final game and led the team in a l3-l3 tie with highly favored Hutchinson. The line was anchored by seniors Ronnie Krehbiel, tackle, Maurice Leckington, center, and Frank Mitchell, guard. Larry Sommerville, veteran gridman who came to NHS as a senior, gave promise of being a great Railer lineman when an injury limited his play to kicking extra points. End Bill Brittain was a pass-catching specialist. Marshall Walker stood out as a corner line-backer on the 3 4 defensive platoon. A flock of juniors became stcilwarts in the line. Playing one of the toughest schedules in the school's history, the Railers won four and lost four, with one tie. Kern was named to the All-Ark Valley first eleven. White, Townsend, and Krehbiel made the second all-star team. Kern led in scoring, White was the leading ground gainer. Townsend completed 41 of 83 passes with Smith and White as his favorite targets. Krehbiel, Rhoades, White, and Kern had top defensive records. Playing their first season under Head Coach Weston Johnson, they swept to the Ark Valley championship with- out a defeat in ten league games. They battled their way to a regional championship victory over Augusta and entry to the state tournament where they lost a heart-stopping overtime game to Sumner after overcoming an ll-point halftime deficit to gain a 50-50 tie at the end of regulation play. The Sumner team eventually lost to Wyandotte by two points in the finals of the state meet. These Railers compiled a record of T7 wins and 5 losses. They bounced back from three defeats at the Dodge City tournament to gain T2 victories in a row before the state tourney loss. This team led by Capt. Billy Townsend, will be remembered as one which, in the words of Coach Johnson, would under no circumstances ever give up.
