Phyllis Utterback, gtudent Gounci fiivzafz The Student Council, led by its president, Ned Arthur, and advisor, Alden Allbaugh, closes the year of 1952-53 with a fine record of achievements. Many things have been accomplished this year by this governing body of Newton High School. Besides the fine dance and assemblies which were held during the year, the student council, which meets every Wednesday morn- ing during activity period, helped NHS to keep its sportsmanship and spirit at the highest level by organizing many school activities and supporting all the school functions. Newton High School's library is one of the outstanding features of the school. From its Well-lighted room, equipped with shelves of all varieties of books and many comfortable tables E Erlwarrla Leffimrwcll, Norma Stahly, Nancy Ruth Ayv-rs. and Irene liirlu-1'sol1. and chairs, students can find information need- ed for their studies and entertainment. To help students select the proper books and articles is Mrs. Mary Roberts, head libra- rian. Assisting her in her many duties are her student librarian helpers. Richard Miller and Clayton Kaufman rated gold emblems in the District livestock judging contest at Haven. The shop team, composed of Merle Entz and Marvin Spencer, placed third at King- man. Both boys ranked in the top ten with 96 boys competing. Ain the State Meet at Manhattan, Merle Entz, Marvin Spencer, Dale Hawkey, Clay- ton Kaufman, and Richard Miller will enter in the judging contest. Ned Arthur will enter in public speaking. V: Q- H, . Page Thirty-Two cc-r and 35762 Under the supervision of Ralph M. Karns, NeWton's chapter of the Future Farmers of America produced two all state farmers, Dale Hawkey and Clayton Kaufman. Going by the motto, Learning to do, doing to learn, learning to live, living to serve, the FFA boys numbered 46 with five honorary members. To begin the year's activity the chapter traveled to the state fair at Hutchinson to look at exhibits and watch the judging con- tests. On October 2, Stanley Smith, Richard Brandt, Richard Hunter, and Dale Hawkey journeyed to Buhler and participated in the Officers Training School in which the boys took competitive tests on the history of the FFA, Richard Brandt placed seventh and Stanley Smith placed tenth. At the South Central district contest for crops and poultry, Clayton Kaufman, Jim Allen, Richard Miller, John Nanninga, Dale Hawkey, Stanley Smith, Richard Brandt, Don Toevs, and Dick McGlachlin all received gold emblem ratings for placing in the top 20 contestants. In the poultry division, NeWton's team took first with 28 other teams competing. Clayton Kaufman, Richard Miller and Jim Allen were members of the team with Dale Hawkey, alternate. At the district dairy judging contest in Hillsboro, the Newton team placed second with 48 teams competing. Clayton Kaufman and Richard Brandt ranked third and fifth respectively. In public speaking, Stanley Smith and Ned Arthur represented the Chapter at Stafford. Both received gold emblem ratings. THE STOCK JUIJGING TEAM: Dick McGlachlin, Richard Miller. Dale Hawkey and Clayton Kaufman.
