Pat Skene and Dorothy Briggs at the piano. Glwzus Happy are those who sing. At least that is the way the members of the Newton High School Chorus feel. Anyone who enjoys singing has an opportunity at the first of the school year to try- out for a place in the chorus. John D. Davidson, chorus instructor, also directed the Girl's Glee Club, Boy's Glee Club, the Madrigals and other ensembles. The mixed chorus, Girl's Glee Club and the Madrigals presented a Christmas program com- prised of both new and old Christmas melodies. A spring concert was also presented by the groups. Vocal numbers which had been entered in the Spring Music Festival were featured. Many honors were received by the department at the Festival. Along with the many different programs given throughout the year, the chorus presented an Easter program over a Wichita radio station. Students taking chorus enjoyed the many good times which came as a reward of their hard work. They gained experience and knowledge that will be of use in their lives for the future. Orem Highlight this year for chorus students of Newton High School was the opera The Medium by Gian-Carlo Menotti. January 28, 1953 was the first time this weird, modern opera has been pre- sented by a high school group. Jan Lehman played the part of Madame Flora, Monica, her daughter, was portrayed by Donna Underwood 5 Eddie Anderson was Toby, the mute Gypsy boy living with Madame Flora. Mr. and Mrs. Gobineau and Mrs. Nolan were played by Howard Oliver, Pat Skene and Jean Ralph, respectively. Accompanying were pianists Dorothy Briggs and Sharon Regier. 4 . ,, , , Morbid black scenery and white furniture was the setting for this tragedy about Madame Flora, who led people to believe she communicated with the dead. During one of her seances, she was frightened by an imaginary hand. She blamed Toby for this and drove him away. When he sneaked back to see Monica, with whom he had fallen in love, Madame Flora thought he was her ghost and shot him. The curtains closed with Madame Flora hysterically weeping over his body and crying Was it you ? Everyone turned in a fine performance of this difficult opera to the applause of many spectators. 'zamczffcs Railers interested in the dramatic side of life studied in room 207, under the coach- ing of Rawley Farnsworth. The students took part in pantomiming, acting, directing, stage-managing, make-up, costuming, light- ing, sound, and other activities. Second year dramatics students gained experience in directing by producing one act plays in Thursday Theater, an experimental playhouse which was organized by Mr. N1 Flapper days are here again-Norma Frey, Jann Kurz, Judy Ballard, Ted Sills, Donna Underwood. and Diane Baird. Diane Baird, Ted Sills, Helen Naylor, and Kaye French as they appeared in the Junior Play, The Little Dog Laughed. Farnsworth. The selection, casting, and directing of the play was left to the student and the finished product was presented in Thursday Theater. The Senior Play, the highlight of the year for the NHS dramatics department was the hilarious comedy, The Whole ToWn's Talking. As juniors, the class of '53 enacted The Little Dog Laughed.
