Mrs. Moore's fifth hour debate class. Debate Resolved: That the Atlantic Pact Nations Should Form a Federal Union, was the topic chosen for debate this year. The Newton high school debate squad enjoyed a very successful season. The team, which was composed almost entirely of first year students, was comparative- ly inexperienced at the beginning of the year. Lois Cowan and Greta Goering were the only returning debaters. This year the squad participated in tourneys at Russell, Haven, and Wyan- dotte. They wonhthe first place trophy at the district debate tournament at Wichita, which earned them a trip to the state tourney. Senior dehaters, Lois Cowan. Greta Goering. and Ned Arthur pose with the trophies. In February, the debate squad proudly brought home the second place trophy after making a fine record at the State Debate Tour- nament at Lawrence. Throughout the second semester, debaters. as well as speech students, worked on orations, readings, extempore, declamation, informative and after dinner speeches. Those who received ratings of highly superior in district competi- tion were Ned Arthur, Jim Cadle, Jerry Hertzler, Lois Cowan, and Dick Gregg. The big highlight of the year came when Newton high speech students collected enough points to win first place at the Ark Valley Speech Festival for the second consecutive year. This classroom is the home of the shutter bug fans who can often be seen taking a picture of almost anything imaginable around school, especially in good weather. From the first picture taken with their own camera, the students learn the basic principles of photography, from develop- ing the negative to printing the finished picture. The amateur photographeifs school year is full of interesting learning. Under laboratory work is learrning dark room procedure of devel- oping and printing pictures. The classroom work includes learning picture composition, negative judging, study of enlarging technique, study of different films, their speeds and sensitivities, and the artful use of filters. Gut Students taking art or crafts under Miss Marie Orr found an opportunity to express their talents in many fields. The individual's impres- sions of life around him were recorded in clay, oil, water color, ink, and pastels. Others spent the year working in silver jewelry, metal, and leather. A spacious classroom and excellent facilities added to the student's creative ability. The main room with skylights, the two smaller rooms and the pottery room are equipped for many uses in the life of the potential artist. One of the highlights of the year was the annual art awards given by the Allen W. Hinkle Company and Scholastic Magazine for those who placed in the Regional Scholastic Art Contest. Two Gold Achievement keys were presented to Alfred Miller, with Janice Dillman, Carol Ewing, and Louis Sandoval, each receiving one. Ofzclwsffza Composed of 83 members and directed by E. S. Sanderson, the Newton High School orches- tra took an active part in school life this year. On March 26, they played at the junior dra- matic production, Once In A Lifetime, and on May 1 they furnished the music for Mr, Berry's Etchingsf' the all-school play. Page Twenty flu , E program with the senior high vocal department in Lindley Hall December 15. On March 31 they presented a concert in which they presented their contest numbers along with the other music groups and ensembles which were to appear in the district music contest at Hutchinson. They received a highly superior rating. Outstanding numbers of the band and orchestra entered the contest with eight ensembles and 21 solos. Out of these 29 entries seven received high- ly superior, 11 superior, seven excellent, and one fair.
