They wonhthe first place trophy at the district debate tournament at Wichita, which earned them a trip to the state tourney. Senior dehaters, Lois Cowan. Greta Goering. and Ned Arthur pose with the trophies. In February, the debate squad proudly brought home the second place trophy after making a fine record at the State Debate Tour- nament at Lawrence. Throughout the second semester, debaters. as well as speech students, worked on orations, readings, extempore, declamation, informative and after dinner speeches. Those who received ratings of highly superior in district competi- tion were Ned Arthur, Jim Cadle, Jerry Hertzler, Lois Cowan, and Dick Gregg. The big highlight of the year came when Newton high speech students collected enough points to win first place at the Ark Valley Speech Festival for the second consecutive year.
