I Palmer House is a squirty water bubbler at the top of the stairs and Mrs. Margo- lin smiling over a paper-laden desk. It is Mrs. Leone straightening her rows and Mrs. Herzog or Mrs. LeClair saying, Don't worry, we'll take care of your problem. It is a green nebbish on a white pin, Barbara Swanton swinging her pois, and a disorderly i meeting in a neat commons room. It is the home of the test tube with its NaCl and AgNO3 and the recording machine with its bonjouf and bomoir. It is the smile and winking eye of Mr. Hawkes. All this is Palmer House. Palmer House, under the dynamic leadership of Harold Hawkes, its Housemaster, has become the most enthusiastic and interesting house in Newton High Shcool. A i. i f vigorous House Council, led by President Bill O'Connell, has conducted Blitzkrieg attacks on student apathy and corrected many kinks in the kogs of Newton High. Led by President Nancy Fine and advisor Mrs. Ehmann, the Civics Committee has spon- sored, among other projecrs, a sparkling Christmas Party. Palmer House has certainly come a long way since the days of 2200 study hall and the Building two office. , X

Evans, P. Janis, W. Albert, R. Swartz, J. Russo, P. Sisson, P. Salow, L. Muther, J. Bilezikian, J. Jordan, B. Schlosberg. ,.., as lf . BEALS CIVICS COMMITTEE FIRST ROW: Barbara Slotnik, Alva Gilvan, Bonnie Schlosberg, Terry Mac- Laughlin, John Bilezikian. SECOND ROW: Judy Davidson, Toby Winston, Judy Gilbern, Charlotte Clifton, David Devore, Jeff McCone, Mr. Kesselheim. Housemaster Kesselheim Rising high above the Walnut Street plain, Kessel- heim's castle is an imposing structure of turrets and gables and delicate, wrought iron balconies. Guarded day and night by the little men in the orange arm-bands, the castle is practically impenetrable - unless you know the pass word. The key to the castle is the trite little word spirit, not rah-rah spirit, but quiet enthusiarn - the kind of spirit that creates and is created by such projects as The Suspension of Nuclear Armament? , the Ground Improvement Committee CG.I.C.D, and The Beals House Story. The castle is constructed of several basic building blocks. The corner stone is Mr. A. Donn Kesselheim - a busy, serious administrator with some time and a smile for everyone. The foundation stones are of the Mrs. Boucher variety - warm, efficient, and full of answers. The active House Council is another important block in the castle. Led by Hiram Gordon. the Council has been a veritable debating society and greenhouse for brand new ideas. The Civics Committee. under John Bilizekian. and the Assembly Committee. under Paula Salow, pile up to make the walls reach the sky. The castle is completed by ten students and faculty of the house. for everybody from Demosthenes' hangout in 1-150 to Miss Ryans headquarters in 1320 is an essential building blmk of Beals House.

The reason that Riley House is known as Newton High School's most active and admired sixth is not the fine Riley faculty, the energetic Riley students, the noticea- ble Riley spirit, the Riley loyalty to the school, or the inferiority of the other houses, but actually a combination of all these factors. Such outstanding events as The Cora Riley Portrait Presentation Assembly, The Riley House Alumni Day, and the Riley House homeroom receptions could never have been accomplished without the excellent work of Miss johnson and her capable staff. The remarkable spirit of Riley House students produced the famous Smiley Riley Day, the sale of Riley's leprechaun badges and those delicious Golden Crumbles, and the impressive bulletin board and commons room displays. However, in a conducive environment of every house for itself, the Riley family truly demonstrated its superiority by showing school loyalty. Unselfishly operating Newton High School's lost-and-found depart- ment certainly evemplified Riley's more mature attitude toward the house plan system. Always first and always ahead is Riley House, where growth is never measured by time, but by achievement. Civics Committee R. Wheeler, Chairman: R. Nathan, V. DelMastro, S. Jacobson, S. Kissell, B.
