The Sophomore Class of 1961 will be the first to complete three years at the new old Newton High School. Their main project this year has been to develop school spirit within their own class. The Sophomore Class Com- mittee feels that more publicity is needed to keep students informed about school activities. The Com- mittee is working on the idea of hav- ing a sophomore representative from each house to provide the rest of the class members with this information. GGVERNMENT Edward Hootstein, john Bilezikian, Roy Reiss, Kenneth Galner, Scott Silliman, Karen Man nets, Nancy Fine, Karen Stone. This former anti-smoking committee has come a long way in expanding to its present scope. Now called the Central Civics Commission, this service arm of the Associates Council is concerned mainly with projects that benefit the School and the student body. For example, conducting school elections, ushering for school events, regulating student parking, and improving school grounds have all been main functions of the Central Civics Commission. The Commission, headed by john Bilezikian, con- sists of each house civics committee chairman, a junior representative from each house, the chairman of the Orange Shield, the vice-president of the Associates, and the faculty advisor, Mr. Gradone. With money floating around the halls of Newton High School, an organization was needed to oversee the expenditure of this vast nebulous sum. The Finance Com- mission aids clubs by determining how much money the student organizations are taking in, why they are making money, or why they are losing money. Our economic situation is so well under control that undoubtedly a member of the Newton High School Finance Commission will be asked to join the Harvard team in Washington. -ug, 'an Roy Reiss.
