Peltier Qs ?7 The Anti-Smoking Committee this year had one of the largest groups oi applicants in its short his- tory. Forty-eight members were chosen out of the two hundred seventy-Five who applied. It vvas the job of these Forty-eight to cope with one cause of school Fires - students' smoking in the school build- ings. The members were given special cards ena- bling them to leave any class in order to go to places in the school Where there was the possi- bility ol smolcing occurring and have done much toward maintaining a safe school For the pupils and teachers.

Miss Frances L Mendell ln 1949-1950 Newton l-ligh School had a group ol people banclecl together in a club which clefiecl the stuclents' age-old dislike ancl fear of mathema- tics. These people met for the sole purpose ol ex- perimenting ancl playing vvith numbers, from simple arithmetic to calculus. ln pursuit of their hobby, the members toolc a trip to Babson's lnstitute in Welles- ley ancl to the calculating machine at l-larvard. At one meeting Mr. Charles Mergandahl gave an in- teresting and informative tall4. Mathematics otlerecl both an invitation to fun and entertainment and a means ol becoming more proficient in the science ol numbers to members.
