Iwi, , ,L FACULTY HE magnitude of Newton High School requires a large faculty, at present this numbers one hundred and twelve teachers, of whom thirty-eight are men. Nearly all of these have home rooms to supervise. The Faculty is divided into eleven departments which are as follows: Business Education, Science, Home Economics, Social Studies, Latin, Mathe- matics, French, Guidance, Music, English, and Physi- cal Education. Each department has its own head to supervise its worlc and attend to its require- ments. The heads of these departments are, re- spectively, Mr. Maynard Maxim, Mr. Charles B. Harrington, Miss Jeannie B. Kenriclc, Mr. Horace Kidger, Dr. Land, Mr. Charles H. Mergendahl, Miss Gertrude E. Myles, Miss Cora E. Riley, Mr. Haydn M. Morgan, Mr. Samuel Thurber, and Mrs. Grace Kuntz and Mr. F, Ewing Wilson. The Business Education Department lists on its statfz Mr. Carl P. Birmingham, who is also business manager of The Newtonite, Miss A. Hortense Church, Miss Gladys A. Cunningham, Miss Mil- dred Hood, Mr. Frederick K. Hussey, Mrs. Helen P. Johnston, Miss Marion B. McGuire, adviser to the Commercial Club, Mrs. Edith B. Newcomb, adviser of the Knitting Club, Mr. Andrew W. Steinhope, in charge of building two, Miss Alma A. Thomas, Miss Ruth M. Twiss, Mr. William L. Winston, supervisor of one of the bands, and Miss Hazel White, the school bursar. The Science Department is composed of Mr. Richard P. Boyer, adviser to the Radio Club, Miss Alice H. Burton, Miss Katherine Curtis, Mr. John C. Hall, adviser to the Chemistry Club, Mr. Arthur G. Hildreth, Miss Anna H. Kennedy, the Nature Club's adviser, Mr. Ernest V. Knapman, Miss Frances V. Lund, Miss Elizabeth L. Mayo, Miss Eleanor B. Richmond, Mr. Floyd E. Somerville, ad- viser to the Science Activities Club, and Mrs. Helen R. Swezey. The Home Economics Department numbers in its ranks Miss Alice A. Few students realize that our principal is a national Figure in the world of education, At present, besides being listed in Whos Who ln Education and Leaders in Education, he is President ofthe National Association of Secondary School Principals, a member of the National Committee on Research in Secondary Education, a consultant on President Roosevelt's Advisory Committee on Educa- tion, a member of the National Council of the National l-lonor Society, and has recently been appointed a member for the World Congress of Education. Some of his past achievements include, lecturer in Boston University Graduate School of Education and examiner in Mathematics and New England Representa- tive For secondary schools lor the College Entrance Examination Board. During 1936-1937 he traveled in twenty-two states, studying schools for the National Survey of Secondary Schools ofthe American Council on Education. At present he is a member of the following educational clubs: l-larvard Teachers' Association, National Educational Association, National Association of Secondary School Principals, Massachusetts Schoolmasters' Club, Massachu- setts Principals' Association, Friday Evening Club, Jesse B. Davis Club, Phi Delta Kappa, l-larvard Graduate School of Education, and the Quinteped Club. Thus it can easily be seen that Newton High should justly be proud of its principal, not only for his Fine accomplishments here at school, but also for his nation-wide activities and renown. Mr. Raymond A. Green First came to our school in 1923 as a teacher in Social Studies. l-le had previously had teaching experience in schools in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, etc. ln 19294930 he spent a year in Germany studying the German educational system. l-le was born in Pennsylvania and has received the degrees of A.B. and M.A. from Mullenberg and Columbia Colleges where he was a four-letter man. l-le has also studied at Harvard and even at Leiden University in Holland. l-le was commissioned in the army during the war. l-le has traveled extensively in Europe. Walters are our mathematics teachers. . The English Department's members are Mrs. Blanch L. Bemis, Mr. Lamoine E. Boyle, Mr. T. Jerome Cutting, Miss Caroline M.
