MR. PAUL E. ELICKER T the May, 1936, meeting of the Newton School Board, Mr. Paul E. Eliclcer was granted a leave of absence from September 1, 1936, to June 1, 1937, to head the Atlantic Zone Committee of the organization for the co-operative study of secondary school standards, which was formally initiated in August, 1933, on call of the U. S. Commissioner of Education, This study is being con- ducted through representatives of six regional associations of colleges and secondary schools in the country, and receives its support from co-operative groups and from a special grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. The work is divided into three phases. The first is the formulation of specific statements of tentative criteria covering schools' philosophy and objectives, the pupil, the staff, the plant, the educational program, and the administration. The second is an experimental tryout of criteria developed in the first phase by ex- perienced school administrators in QOO selected schools, including schools in every state, and representing such schools as will include the various elements present in the complex character of our educational system. The third phase will include an extensive analysis of results, in order to provide material for evaluat- ing secondary schools. This phase will be conducted during the year 1937-1938. After a three-week period in the staff office in Washington in September, when schools in the vicinity of that city were visited, each committee has been at work in its respective area, spending from two to five days in each school. We of Newton l-ligh School are justly proud of the great honor which both the school and our principal have received through his appointment to help in executing this important and difficult task, This study must have been interesting and stimulating. We are extremely grateful for the felicitous messages he has sent to the student body, and we are looking forward to his return. Five

RAYMOND A. GREEN, ACTING PRINCIPAL I-IE Newtonian wishes to con- gratulate lvlr. Green on his successful year as Acting Principal. In the absence of Mr, Eliclcer, he has performed his numerous duties with cheerful understanding and proficiency. lt is no small task to be respon- sible for the affairs of a school with an enrollment of oyer 9,000 for there are always new problems to meet. Mr. Green has never failed to meet one of these problems effi- ciently. Added to his more serious ac- tivities Mr, Green finds time to ap- pear in the popular Faculty Plays. Below we see our Acting, Principal as he looks when he acts. MR, GREEN, ACTING SI-IERLOCK HOLMES
