Journalism and Printing staffs have joined efforts to give us an opportunity to gain the experience in both the editorial and mechanical work necessary to the issuing of a publication. Under the direction of Miss Lucille Kaul this volume has been edited by high school seniors. The acquisition of an adequate press has made possible, for the first time, the printing of the BEACON annual by high school students. As directed by Mr. Miles Thompson, our stu- dents have gained valua-ble experience such as is helpful in deciding upon a vocation. We, the Annual Staff, have assembled this record of the class of 1937 not only that our class may refer to it with pleasant memories in the years to come, but that school officials, our parents, and our friends may have this evidence of the results obtained from their having provided for us various avenues of experience. Through mutual efforts requiring responsibility and initiative we have obtained that knowledge which is useful as we approach definite careers. it Q l Q up E. i' E.o. Gildersleeve, the staff of the annual of February, 1937, dedicates this log. Her knowledge of the sea on which we have embarked has steered us from many a reefg her optimistic outlook has given us faith in unknown Q e Waters, and her confidence has aided us. in setting sails toward the port of ' graduation. A, We know her as a kind officer, and willingly have we manned the ship of education. The crew which has done its four years of servcie signals farewell with regret. In parting we leave to her this record of our workwhich we trust she will look upon as an achievement in which she has had a distinct part. i Three X xx IIBIEMIIZIIJIN 957 ws x Q N wx XNXX XXQEX X www ix X XX wx' X X Y X if X 2 i SQEQ Egkgii usa X fx SX m kQaii:i w S1 S xx' Nliss Eulah Massey' Font ,lv Q Q N X , . Thus the necessity of making this one and only voyage a successful one-a victory in spite of the obstacles which come to all. b To this voyage I call and charge you that you sail Worthy of the sacrifices which have enabled you to attain this end, worthy of those Who have labored long and patiently that you might be prepared, and worthy of Alma Mater. V V S You have prepared yourselves for your voyage' byilearning the neces- sity of cooperation, the idealsofcitizenship, the value and need of faith in God and your fellowman. Now believe as Emerson did when he Wrote these lines: ' ' . ' i "Trust thyself: every heart 'vibrates to that iron string. Accept the peace the divine providence has found for you, the 'society of your contem- poraries, the connection of events." Self-Reliance. -EULAH ANNE MAssiEY. live A 957 M A gi... ,,Y.Y,V,Y.. ' 'Tis the set of the sail, and not thu gale, 'Flint deterininus the way they go, I Like the winds of the S0111 :1,1'e'tl1u waves of 'Fu,1.e, , As we voyage along tlirough life, ' - 'Tis the set of the sail that decides the goal, V V n And-not tho valm or strife." I ., ' Using the message ot the above poem as a basis for further thought., may I commend to you three guiding principles which are fundamental for a successful career: Q11 That each of you have some definite objective in life. Bul- Wer says, "The man who seeks one, and but one, thing in life may hope to achieve ity but he who seeks all things, wherever he goes, only reaps, from the hopes which he sows, a harvest of barren regretsf, QZD That you use all your trained faculties and everyday exper- iences to help you attain your objective. Your education should give you the ability to apply your powers in the right way to reach ultimately the goal which you have set for yourself. 3 That ou ma have the will ower to adhere to a determinate y ry 1 ur ose throu h all disadvanta es. Use disadvanta es to stren then P P 3 . . , our coura e fortitude and atience. The World s work must be done Y g ' ' . . . . by those Who have the determination to strive against adversity. I W -S. Confusion, accidents, hard labor and concentration have helped to create this scene. lVlyriads of neon lights and thousands of factories loom in the industrial panorama. Railroads, automobiles, trucks, airplanes and ocean liners indicate that machines play a big part as instruments of the motor energy that dominates our era. In this quickened tempo of progress sailboats have developed into modernistic-ocean liners, log cabins have become skyscrapers, and covered Wagons, in their uncertain tread, have given way to air-conditiond stream- lined trains. - -.J - ,As one of the many phases of modern enterprise, education has ad- justed its tempo and scope to correspond with other important develop- ments. It covers so broad a circle of liberal and vocational knowledge that those who have learned with its tools are enabled to go out into the pursuits of a progressive world fully equipped. i In our high school a great number of these advantages are available. Numerous fields that provide for the pupilsea range of learning have been thrown open to individual and group achievement. 1 l'Besides the traditional and fundamental departments of English, science, mathematics, social studies and the languages, classes and extra- curricular activities in drama, journalism, music, physical education, com- mercial studies, printing and a recent innovation, general shop work, have I 'been organized and developed to give specialized knowledge and training to the interested student. e ' A . - Thirty-Four ffvvii l L ,-f.jgff- ---5.2, -in .:1'- I y. -,if :L J, .1-,,, . jf., ., aj "'-H ' --.
