October 13th is Navy Birthday, and we celebrated in true Navy fashion with an informal ceremony attended by Miss Norway CEine Vallej, Vice Admiral Finneran, Rear Admiral Lygo, and Rear Admiral Bernard B. Forbes, prospective Commander Carrier Striking Force. Also participating were Captain Olaf Bjornstad, Norwegian Navy CRetJ, who has crossed the Atlantic many times, and the youngest and oldest members of NEWPORT NEWS, Fireman Apprentice James Parker and Senior Chief Signalman Lester Garringer. Miss Norway, FA Parker and SMCS Garringer together cut a special cake baked to celebrate the occasion and the as- sembled officers and crew joined in the festivities, as did several Navymen and family members stationed in Nor- way. Aspecial part of our Navy Birthday celebration was the frocking', of one officer and four chiefs from the ship. When frocked a Navy man is granted the uniform and privileges of a higher rank for which he has been selected, and which duties he is actually performing while awaiting normal promotion. Advanced in the ceremony were Lieu- tenant Richard E. Gallegos, Master Chief Operations Speci- alist James T. Keogh, Master Chief Hospital Corpsman Mordecai J. Hines, Master Chief Hull Technician William J. Hayes and Senior Chief Boiler Repairman Homer Frost. Master Chief Electronics Warfare Technician Willie L.
