the specialty of the house - good food, warm allies, fine clothes, irish linen la linea GlBRALTAR, B. C. C. Journeying across the expanse of the At- lantic, our thoughts were not only of what was behind us, but of the countries and ex- periences which were yet to unfold. The Rock was the first sight of land after 9 days, 22 hours and 30 minutes and to most of us it was a stirring one. It proved to be as solid as that insurance salesman once stated it, Yes, we were here! Now, the Rex Cleaners are on the pier . . . This seemed to suggest that the Crown Cleaners had a Mediterranean branch, but when our dress blues were returned with but- tons, we knew better. And the Bobbie stand- ing on the pier as well as the cockney taxi driver were constant reminders that we were merely visitors, on British soil. They opened their fortress, their shops and their taverns to us. One of the latter even offered Phil Spitalney's Band lGibiditionl, and of course beer. For those who were more adventurous there were daily tours to Seville and Malaga and nightly tours to Algeciras and LaLinea. So it was, that after three quiet but pleasant days, we set sail for our second Port-of-Call. ...Q fl...- some of us even made friends . . . n . . . . .'.'. .'.......-.. . . . . - . . . . . . - '.'.'.'.'.'. ' A tell you what l'ma gonna do LISBON As the first big city of the cruise, Lisbon proved to be a welcomed Metropolis. For most it was the first visit to Portugal, save possibly for several plank owners who had been here on the NEWPORT NEWS's first Mediterranean fling. We tied up at the Doca alcontora and found ourselves no more than a stone's throw to the center of town. Avenue de Liberadorde was described in the Gouge' as the Fifth Avenue of Lisbon. However, there was little besides the prices to suggest this. Many Nite Clubs dotted the narrow side streets, among these the Texas Bar, Maxins, and Cristol. One couldn't help but notice that here was a port unique in many respects. The old town had its narrow, hilly, unpaved streets . . . and the Fado , the Portuguese folk song. The tours to Sintra and Estvil displayed numerous palaces and monuments as well as a picturesque countryside. Some of us also visited the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima. Shipboard activity during this period was largely concerned with receiving the officers and men of the Sixth Fleet Staff. lt was here that we began to accept the sound of Beeps and the shrillness of the Boatswain's pipe as commonplace. The people of Lisbon were most cordial to the fleet. As one of their friendly gestures, they pre- sented a Bull Fight at the local arena, The Alges Bull-Ring. It was a thrilling exhibition displaying the native styles of Mexico and Spain, as well as Portugal. But the highlight of the afternoon was the keen contest between our sailors and the bull. With much to do, our seven days in Lisbon were a complete as well as an interesting experience.
