Journeying across the expanse of the At- lantic, our thoughts were not only of what was behind us, but of the countries and ex- periences which were yet to unfold. The Rock was the first sight of land after 9 days, 22 hours and 30 minutes and to most of us it was a stirring one. It proved to be as solid as that insurance salesman once stated it, Yes, we were here! Now, the Rex Cleaners are on the pier . . . This seemed to suggest that the Crown Cleaners had a Mediterranean branch, but when our dress blues were returned with but- tons, we knew better. And the Bobbie stand- ing on the pier as well as the cockney taxi driver were constant reminders that we were merely visitors, on British soil. They opened their fortress, their shops and their taverns to us. One of the latter even offered Phil Spitalney's Band lGibiditionl, and of course beer. For those who were more adventurous there were daily tours to Seville and Malaga and nightly tours to Algeciras and LaLinea.
