HERE THEY COME! The Marines of LIMA CO arrived the morning of 6 August 1990 and moved into the spacious Marine berthings. They didn't stay in them for too many days though because they kept getting transferred to other ships in the MARG. NEWPORT also onloaded KILO CO. before she left for Rota and Barcelona, Spain leaving LIMA CO behind down at MOMBA Station to guard the U.S. Embassy. Marines were a huge help during working parties and participated in several rec- reational events. Marines spent most of their time training. Frequent lectures, physical training, vehicle maintenance, and cleaning occupied most of their underway time. When inport they had ample opportunity to enjoy the culture and nightlife of various countries NEWPORT visited. Down at Momba station they took turns flying to the Embassy to guard it. The embassy never was attacked, which annoyed some Marines. The various exercises they were in during Sierra De Rettin, Spain and in Saros Bay, Turkey were little satisfaction for most of them. Most would have rather been in Saudi Arabia with the rest of the troops. However the presence of MARG in the Med was surely a deterrent to any terrorist activity during the War. yr 4. , ,ff ,,., , ,fiifim yy -I I 1 .., Q H! ,WM ' fvf375,3jzZ1552f - ' 5 The onload at Morehead City took 4 hours 32 minutes.
