SHIP'S SERVICE SH'S are the salesmen of NEWPORT. They sell everything from freeze pops to toenail clippers in the ship's store, and make a decent profit as well. Perhaps their most important job is doing the laundry of five hundred sailors and ma- rines. They also fill the soda machines, over 40 cases a day. They would have filled the candy machine every day too, but it burned up early in the cruise and couldn't be fixed till we returned home. SH1 W EVANS sHz K, FISHER xwwis. 3 - ' 1 . The Cook's work is never done. MS's are up at three to make the donuts and bread. Then they cook breakfast. Wlhile the Mess Cooks clean after breakfast, the MS's prepare for lunch. After lunch, clean again, then make and serve dinner. Then clean again and after a brief rest it's time to cook the midnight rations, midrats, for the 2330 serving. After cleaning up rnidrats. . . well, it's time to make the donuts again. Every day the MS's cooked over 1500 meals. That adds up to over 315,000 meals. Even with all the meals the Cooks still found time for training, supporting ship's par- ties, Saturday pizza nights, and all those working parties. Marines were a big help with the numerous working parties. V MSCQSWJ J.
