li?- 4?- l ,7 X The purpose of this cruise book is to provide an h' and ' ' istorical record through w d pictures, of life aboard NEWPOR , or s T during the cruise of August 1980 - February 1981. Over five hundred Sailors and Marin ' ' late Au ' ' es sailed from the East Coast ' gust. This book will center its tt ' in a entlon on those men, for th they are NEWPORT th ey are the story, , ey are the adventurers through which you can relive their cruise. Their travels take them to the windy, barren shores of Northern Scotland, into the majestic Fjords of Norway, to the historical French city of Dunkerque and the exciting city of Lisbon, Portugal. They stop in Rota, Spain and cross the Mediterra- nean Sea in mid-autumn. They transit the Suez Canal, pass through the Red Sea and explore the Indian Ocean. They visit Mombasa, Kenya and view its vast wild animal preserves. They touch down briefly in Diego Garcia, 12,000 miles from home. They winter in the Mediterranean Sea, spending the Holiday Season in Malaga, Spain. They visit the exotic port of Tangier and the historic Rock of Gibraltar. They stop in Naples and Gaeta, Italy close to the origins of the great Roman Empire. For six months these men w ld ou be part of the first line of defense for the United States. The NavyfMarine Corps Team would A . . range over half the globe' from th rctic Circle to the Equator from th , e , e East Coast of the United States to the In- , dian Ocean. They would eventually touch down in ten countries on three continents. The crew of NEWPORT i s a remarkable collection of talent, background, skill and energy. The book tries to capture all f h ' b d' o t at, allowing the faces and o ICS to tell the story of the toil, sweat, worry, happiness, adventure and pro- fessionalism that is the essence of the men and the cruise. If this book can come close to illustrating the harmony and singleness of purpose of five hundred men, if it can mirror a portion of the affection and respect generated in six months of pursu- ing this common task, then we will have succeeded . . . Now Hear This To all hands The making of a Cruise Book is very much like its subject, the CRUISE. It is a group endeavor, at once exciting and challenging but composed mostly of hard, tiring work. There is nothing in this world quite like going down to sea for a long period in a US Navy ship. Five hundred men live close together for six months. You travel, work, eat, sleep and relax together. The relationships you develop will be personal and lasting. The impressions of what you see and hear will remain with you throughout your life and mold your thoughts and opinions as much as any school or work experience. This book is your attempt to capture your shipmates in action, to record those impressions and make them a matter of record. This is your book. You are the authors, editors, principal characters and the main audience. Everyone else is an outsider. But that is the way it must be. Being a sailor aboard NEWPORT from August 1980 to February 1981 was an ex- perience that can not and will not be duplicated. This then is your book and your version of the Cruise of 1980-81. I am pleased to have had the opportunity to share your experiences with you as your shipmate. The pride and honor that I feel as Captain of this great crew and fine ship can only be expressed in the pic- tures and words of this book. The Captain X .lx . I i I. -...--
