Condition was the main thing and Coach Arnzen ran his team week after week until they were ready for the first game. This was the tryout, but wasn't significant as Newport rolled over Hebron. Practicing continued and at their peak they ran up a fourteen game winning streak. lt wasn't until after the New Ye that they began their rise to stardom. The team was made up of Leroy Redmond and Charley Derrick at guards, Doug Sheanshang and Fred Moeves at forward, and Bobby Knapp at center. These five were ably assisted by another Senior, Don Grothaus, as well as representa- tives from the reserve team. The Wildcats suffered greatly in losing "lanky" Joe Schuster at center. 83 Newport Opponent Newport Opponent Newport Opponent hh,,,,..W 2331101 rw.-...........,.., 1 1 Center R Young Mgr First Row Left to Right D Sheanshang F Moeves R Knapp l. The tallest man on the team was Sheanshang, only six-one. Being largely seniors this year they played like champs for Newport High, doing such feats as beating Holmes, Campbell County and Dayton twice during regular season play, and winning the Carrolton Invitational Tournament. Newport took the Northern Kentucky Athletic Confer- ence, and went on to play in the District, Regional, and finally the State Tournament. So the end of a glorious season for six champion ball players came to an end. Newport can never forget the boys that played their way up to the N.K.A.C. championship, Thirty sixth District, Ninth Regional champion- ship and the Carrolton Tournament Championship. The New- portian says "goodbye" to these boys, and hopes to see their names in the headlines for some college teams. 84 Guard Guard Doug Sheanshang Bob Knapp Forward Center and Captam Fred Moeves 85 Don Grothaus Forward Forward Leroy Redmond Charlie Derrick IIT 1 N.
