This year we landed to trade our goods obtained from foreign ports. For this reason our main project in third grade was a store. Finally we left dock and headed for more exciting adventures. The bars and rings on the school playground were a great challenge. especially when there were accidents such as, running a tooth through a lip because of a fall. We longed for the sight of land and pro- vided a substitute to fulfill our wishes. We had a May Day program in which many of us were dressed as flowers or dancers. Our fifth year on board ship was to us a very hard year. We said good-bye to recess, and tried to break our disappointment by demonstrating what talents we had, thus providing entertainment. As a class, we parti- cipated in a Minstrel Show and put on a pro- gram for the P.T.A. In art class we made puppets which we used to put on a puppet show. 1952 was a very good year for all the crew. We docked at Mrs. Eslinger's room. While there our patrol took their usual trip to Washington, D. C. Something always hap- pens on every trip and this was no exception. On the way down, Mr. Rhykerd had a flat tire which delayed them for a while. Every- one enjoyed the trip just the same. This year also was election year. Of course we had our own campaign on board the ship. We portray- ed such persons as Mr. Harry S. Truman, his daughter, Margaret, Mr. Richard M. Nixon, and Mr. Dwight D. Eisenhower. This was a real day for everyone. . I yn -1 Q . A . .dw . f A ui iff "uf i??2Q4 i LSR. AJ .5 x wi H' Now we change our course. The next six years are dedicated to the day we will gradu- ate. Our crew increased in number because the country schools formed a jointure with Newport Borough. As a change of pace, we put on an assembly consisting of two short pantamines. It was a pleasure doing it and I'm sure everyone enjoyed it. Something new came up in our eighth year on board the "N.H.S.", a skating party. This went over fine because most of us wanted a change of routine. Bake sales were also a speciality, thus starting our money making activities. As time went on our present ship was worn by many storms and trials of the sea. Thus we were assigned to another ship. Each of us picked up all our belongings and went. ll lll lli S 5 . There was much confusion for a few days until we became acquainted with the rooms. While transferring we, as a class, toured the Gettysburg battle field. Of course it rained. Instead of getting seasick, a few of the girls got airsick when they looked down from the top of the tower overlooking P r e s i d e n t Eisenhower's farm. After boarding the new ship, we had more entertainment such as dances and skating parties. All ashore for the tea! The sophomore tea with "BON VOYAGE" as the theme, was the biggest event of our voyage thus far. Every crew member did his best to make the tea a success. Thanksgiving brought on a feast and an assembly. Of course every crew member needed a hat to keep the sun out of his eyes. This is where our class hats of black and white wool came in handy. ,uf Our next docking was at the Newport gym for the junior prom in honor of last year's seniors. "ERB TIDE" was the theme used. The prom committee worked many long and hard hours on the decorations. Until prom time, they were nearly too tired to enjoy themselves. As Christmas drew near, we re- ceived a present from ourselves. This was our class ring. Meanwhile back on the ship, we had the responsibility of selling candy at dinnertime, at wrestling matches, and at basketball games. Now hear this! Now hear this! The final year of our voyage has come. The twelve long years I mentioned before have gone so fast that it doesn't seem possible that in a few days we will be on our own in this great world. Our first tempest we had to over- gk i Q. Y I .f K com e was th e planning o f th e H1959 BLUNITAH. This tempest was overcome with very little difficulty. Of course everyone wanted a picture of his shipmates. Conse- quently, a photographer came on board the ship and took our pictures. Since everyone likes refreshments at a football game, our crew gladly acknowledged their desire, rain or shine. Then now can anyone of us forget the trip to Harrisburg to tour the capitol? This was a very rich experience for each oi us. As the time came to leave for home, we boarded the buses. All except four students were on board. These we left behind. To break the monotony on the ship was chemis- try lab. If one wasn't breaking a test tube, someone else was breaking an evaporating dish. The class of 1959 then had the pleasure of attending a beautiful prom given on our " ' "fZ.i'. mil: ff. .2 1. R honor by the juniors. We truly appreciated the time and effort which they put forth to make the prom a success. We also had the privilege of attending the sophomore tea which was held out of doors this year. "New York City here we come!" was the familiar cry as the year came to a close. To begin with our train was fifteen minutes late. Meanwhile another train came by. Everyone, thinking this our train, grabbed his luggage and waited. To our disappointment, the train went flying on by. Although "THE MUSIC MAN" was a wonderful stage play, a few stu- dents slept through part of it. Some even slept standing on their own two feet. Satur- day evening came with notes of joy. Each of us was tired and were waiting for the nice soft bed at home. "Wh at do y o u want most out of life: Significance, Affection, or Security?" was the point stressed by Rev. Donald Treese in his inspiring Baccalaureate message. The class then gave its last assembly. In class day the history, the poem, the will, and the prophecy were read and gifts were distribut- ed. In the last gathering of the class as a whole, graduation night, we had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Philip Lovejoy, a graduate of the University of Michigan, speak on "Make Way for Tomorrow." T h e cl a s s of 1959 wishes to thank our teachers and all those who made it possible for us to be a part of this graduating class. Last, but not least, we wish to thank Mrs. Wertz and Mr. Brinser who have given much of their time and effort to make our final years successful ones. , 9 sf I ii l Zfie Billy Ney Scdolarsfiip Awards The Billy Ney Scholarship Awards are given to honor a man who has given unself- ishly of his time and talents in behalf of the youth of Newport and vicinity. One award will be made annually to an eligible male graduate of Newport High School from each of the following graduating classes 1959, 1960, 1961, and 1962. Each award will be valued at two thousand dollars and will consist of five hundred dollars for each school year, provided that the recipient maintains personal and scholastic standards satisfactory to his college or university. All male graduates are eligible for the awards and selection is made by the Newport Union School Board on the following basis: 1. Secondary school scholastic record. 2. Breadth of interests and native ability as evidenced by extracur- ricular activities: their nature, quantity, and degree of success in each. 3. Participation in church and other organizations, with particular refer- ence to the display of leadership. 4. Personality, appearance, stability, poise ,and vitality. The award winner may select any recogniz- ed undergraduate college or university. Fi- nancial need shall not be an influence in the selection of an award winner. Scholarships interrupted by military service will be con- tinued without prejudice at the end of such service, provided the student has not become eligible for a government scholarship. Each semester the award winners shall make a report of their scholastic records to the Adams Foundation, Incorporated. Th e Billy Ney Scholarship Award was made possible by the Adams Foundation, In- corporated, which was established to promote education, religion, and good citizenship, to assist the needy and unfortunatesg and to en- courage philanthropic pursuits generally. It has a perpetual charter and is administer- ed by a board of directors. The beneficiaries of the Foundation include six churches, nine colleges, four hospitals, and fifteen civic and youth organizations. The Adams Foundation is the outgrowth of the generous natures of Rolland L. Adams and Pauline Hombach Adams who are alumni of Newport High School. The Billy Ney Scholarship Award was given this year to Lanny Ehrhart.
