We appreciate the patience, interest, and guid- ance they have given us in our high school years. Without their help, we could not possibly be able to look back upon these years in Newport High with joy and pleasure, and we could not regard them as "the best years of our lives." KENNETH WRIGHT Received sufficient credits to graduate in military service 1 m,n,,,,.. ,.-- lziglilh grad liettysburg e assembly , 1 '14, Carniy al concession stand Class Histor v ilihrougli these portals one may pass'- we have traveled the long road. and now as we look hack we recall many pleasant memories we encountered during our years at Newport High School. We entered first grade in the year 1915. It was a new experience for us. but it was also an exciting one. We went through the first six years with fly- ing colors. We had gained a better un- derstanding of how to get along with other people and. of course. books. Our first day in seventh grade was a hectic one. However. the upperclassnien helped us along by showing us the gen- eral routine. One of the things that was exciting in our seventh year was the assembly we put on in front of the whole school. When we became freshmen. we found out that we would have to make money if we wanted to go on a class trip. So we set out by having dances. skating parties. and bake sales with Mr. Brown and Hrs. Soule as our advisors. We entered a float in the Halloween parade every year of our high school career. In our sophomore and junior years we had a summer carnival stand which proved to be a worth-while project. We honored the members of the senior class of 1955 and their mothers at a tea held on the school lawn. In spite of the wind, it was a successful event and likewise the dance which followed in the evening in honor of the seniors. In our junior year we sold Prom peanuts and received our class rings. Mr. Creveling replaced Mr. Brown as our class advisor. Wie held our big event-the ,lunior-Senior Prom in honor of the class of 1956. The theme was "This Is Heaven." and it was a very' heavenly Prom. It was the first Prom to be held in the new gym and a flower garden was the main attraction in the center of the floor. Card tables were placed along the walls with a candle and angel hair in the center. A star and moon covered with snapdragons hung over the garden. Foil stars hung from the ceiling and glittered when the lights fell on them. Class advisors for '54 and '55 This final year-Our Sen- ior Yearfhas been a very exciting and busy one. Our money-making projects for the year were selling candy at noon and at basketball games. The most important one was to earn money for the class trip to Washington. We took our trip in.the fall on October 24. 25. and 26 to lighten our schedule in the spring. In doing this. we also eliminated the rush otherwise encountered in Washington in the Spring. 4--' n' V V 4 1 31.84" O Sophomore' tr-a Now as we complete our high school career, we feel we can face the future with a better understanding of the world around us. We appreciate the kindness of all who have helped and guided us through the past twelve years. We wish to express our thanks to the two people who have helped make these years a success. Without the help of our class advisors. Mrs. Soule and Mr. Creveling, we could not have come through with flying colors. We leave Newport Joint High inspired by our class motto: "WE BUILD THE STAIRS TODAY THAT WE WILL CLINIB TOMORROW." Geraldine Knisley. Class Historian Poothallconce ion tand Another was the junior-Senior Play, "If Mother Only' Knew." Vile were honored by the junior class with the annual Prom. the theme of which was Spring Nighti' and by the sophomore class on May 22 at the Sophomore Tea. We were complimented many times for our fine Class Day program in which we presented four scenes. the playground. Tea. Prom. and Prophecy scenes. "S,-XLfXll IIXYFC a comedy in three acts was presented on Xovemlrer l and 2. 19-tory of the Play! Nancy and Pete Hammond are agog over a "surprise" being planned for them by their parents. The nsurprisei' turns out to be a dud in the person of a cousin whom the Hammond youngsters have never seen. And what a letdownl Clementine is about sixteen and looks like a glamour girl of the lflfttfs. She came direct from a private school in the east where all she has been taught is the art of sturly. And what a student she turned out to bel Nancy had a ln-au. Jim- my. and she treats him as impersonal- ly as though he were a stick of wood. she is that sure of him. Soon after Clementine comes Jimmy begins dressing up and acting the part of a studious young man. Thatis when cousin Clementine takes over Nancyis boyfriend. Pete has a penchant for being interested in anything new. just now heis experimenting with botany and his enthusiasm for the subject is at fever heat. Another thing he's fond of is draping him- self over an easy chair and visiting via telephone with Sylvia. Peter soon finds out that women just wonit be placed second. even to an experiment in botany and here. too. Clementine has a finger in the pie. The night of the school dance comes and Clem- entine blossoms forth as did Cinder- ella of old. Jimmy by now wants only to resume his role of "old faithful? to Nancy: but there are obstacles. Mother Hammond lends her expert hand to the straightening out of their tangled plot threads and once again peace and quiet reign in the Ham- mond household. The team had a new coach. Robert Craig. a graduate of Lock Haven State Teachers College. Craig was dis- appointed in seeing only four seniors report. The four seniors were Don Clegg. Bill Kimmick. Gil Clouser. and Jay Shaffer. Linderclassmen include Bill Saylor. Nlike Peters. lim Lesh. Earl Heisey. Carl Campbell. Lanny' Ehrhart. ,lim Clouser. Glen Campbell. Dave Xliller. Jerry Rothenberger. Corbett Ftrawser. Tom Gibney. Bill Kahler. Terry Keiter. Bob Drew. Stan Sheaffer. Ed Casner. and Barry Miller. and Clyde Campbell. The Buffaloes were hurt hy having Ed Casner and Earl Heisey on the injured list. Jerry Bothenburger quarterback. directed the Buffaloes attack and always mixed his plays well. Hothenherger was also a good passer. and ends Tom Gibney' and flick Sharar pull them down. ln the running department. Bill Kahler did most of the liall carrying. Un defense. Harold Clouser was always the most consistent man. He was in on T55 of the tackles. The Buffaloes lost to Boiling Springs. Dallastown. Perry' Joint. Williamstown. Highspire. l-inola. Camp Hill. Juniata Joint. and Susquenita. Newport did win one game in which they' beat Carson Long 12-0 on Carson Longis field. This was the first win for Newport since half way' through the 1954 season. The line from Newport played an exceptionally' great game. The Buffs held the Cadets on the four yard line and kept them from scoring. The Cadets recovered thrce fumbles of the Buffs. but they' were soon taken again by the Buffaloes. Half way through the first quarter. Bill Kahler romped 55 yards for the beginning of the first TU. Kahler. being pushed out of bounds on the eighth yard line. charged through the line and made the score 6-0. For the extra point. the Buffs tried a play' which was right up through the middle. This play was stopped bye the Cadetis line. ln the second quarter after receiving a punt from the Cadets. the Buffs journeyed to the six-yard line where Gil Clouser. the Buffalo fullback. charged from the six-yard line for TD number two. Again the try' for the extra point was unsuccessful. Chief factor in the win was the handling of the split-T attack by' quarterback jerry Bothenberger who mixed his plays well on both touchdown marches. He and Kahler were the big running guns on the first TD while Clouser teamed up with Kahler in leading the Buffs downfield for their second touchdown. On Thanksgiving day' in the annual game against Susquenita. the Buffs showed a new spirit and great promise for the next season. The entire team with the exception of four seniors will be back for Newport next year and they' expect to greatly improve the record of this year. Coach Craig also introduced wrestling into Newport. It was mainly' intramural wrestling but next year they' will compete with other schools of this area. The boys journeyed to Boiling Springs for an exhibition match in which they' lost but they did beat Green Park in another exhibition match. Kerrn Harry' and Bill Kimrnick were co-captains of the team. W restlm WILLIAM KIMMICK Co-Captains KERMIT HARRY 13, A O lg I . . ,, 1 xl, 9-124 st row: J. Weftford. T. Chilton. K. Walhet. R.
