W' The summer of 1986 brought with it the usual heat-filled, long, bright days. The dry August temperatures were reason enough to cause families to seek vacations away from the city heat. This heat caused many to alter their lans to find more ideal times fldr various activities. Such was the day of August 26, 1986. On that morning, in the early Ere-dawn hours, one jogger made is way down a most y vacant Iosey Lane. The hour provided what little cool an early August morning could offer. The young day also offered the jogger and a po iceman in his atrol car a sight which would affect the lives of those who would spend the 1986-87 school year at Newman Smith High School. The alarm was turned in at 4:15 a.m., and firemen had the blaze out by 7:30 a.rn. During this time, a fire, which began in the school's main office, destroyed that office and badly damaged other front offices and the math wing above. Tragic? Yes, but in traged one often finds his strength, and this strength, perhaps called TT1 roya s Show 'Strength 1xr1I'O gh Togetherness' po 'Matchless' Trait toge erness, provided Smith stude ts and faculty the oppor- tunity o see the positive va ues of t e school. Classes began without oksg departments were run with shortage of phone services fo a month, Xerox machines w e borrowed, and everyone got t e job done wit less. Thanks to reconstructi workers, smoke mage as dealt with quickly, an e offers of help from the communit made the smoke smell whicff lasted for months easier to bear. All of the situations caused by the fire only served to bring out the determination of Trojan sup- porters.
