The Choir Sings Their Way to the Top T he year proved to be a successful one for the Choral Depart- ment. Once again, the year began with members of the A Cap- pella Choir rehearsing songs in a variety o foreign languages for the All-District audi- tions. The choir boasted twenty-three members of the All- District Choir and from these, eleven were placed by audition in the All-Region Choir. Senior, Robin Thomp- son, and junior, Micheal Obar, qualified for All-Area, and Robin advanced to become a member of the Texas All-State fin 1. The ensemble strikes a al pose for the audience. - Choir. An all-day outing at Wagon Wheel Stables gave the choirs a chance to relax and get acquainted. The Sing-A-ThonfBake Sale, held in front of Tom Thumb Pa e and an in-school candy sale were the main fund- raisers of the year. Following soon after, the Fall Concert in Oc- tober showed signs for a great year to come. Beginning in mid- November, the Vocal Ensemble performed for a number of com- munity lgroups using a winter t eme. Evening shows at local malls in December repared the choirs for their special Christmas con- cert entitled, My Favorite Thin s. The choir also fares well at the U.l.L. Solo and Ensemble Contest by placing six soloists and two small ensembles at the State level of com- petition. After return- ing from Christmas break in Ianuary, the A Cap ella Choir began work on Oklahoma, the Choral De art- ment's first fjull- fledged musical. The show was a success featuring the choir as a cast and Robin Thomp- son, Matt Apple, Tif- fany Sullivan, Amy Par er, Brad Barton, Michael Obar, and Kris S t o n e a s l e a d characters. U.I.L. Con- cert and Sightreading Contest in A ri brought an excellent performance by the Women's Choir and the highest rating in the Concert portion for the A Cappella Choir. As a reward for all of the hard work put forth by the choirs, the Booster Club spon- sored the spring retreat to San Antonio in April. As graduation time neared, the Final Concert and Senior Awards Banquet both honored the seniors and put the finishing touches on an ex- cellent year.

Students Change Roles for Po derpuff A stranger walking down the hall on the day of the powderpuff game would indeed think something weird was go- ing on at Smith. And what else should he think when an oversized foot- ball jersey is draped over a petite body and the cheerleaders have hairy legs. Powderpuff is a time for the girls and guys to switch roles and have a blast doing it. Both the senior and junior girls practiced hard after school for the clash on the field, while the guys learned their routines to entertain the crowd from the sidelines and during the half-time show. The junior girls were defeated by a score of 28 to 27 giv- ing the team of '87 a win for the second con- secutive year. QW' 10 fe gxl' , , n A , , 'W ..., -j , ,Y . ii:-E X 5 . Q. . S ff -wif . el ..
