just a Stage . . . Or So The Upon this stage : Theatre Arts De- partment, led by the director, Ms. Mildred Peveto, had many magical moments. It started off with a bang at the National Forensic Meet in Tulsa, Okla- homa. The squad suc- cessfully represented its name as junior Mike Gensler and senior Audra Hans were among the top thirty- five in the events of Ex- temporaneous Speaking and Humorous Inter- pretation, and senior Tina Parker placed fourth in the nation in Dramatic lnterp. Count- ing in the spirit of suc- cess, the summer work- shop was a big hit, with over sixty talented newcomers in attend- ance. In the competitive cir- cle, the squad brought home a sweepstakes award from all forensic tournaments attended, Say qualifying close to twenty individuals in various events for the Texas Forensic State Meet in March. Newman Smith's own annual qualifying tour- nament, SPONTANEI- TY '86, again upheld its renown reputation of being one of the best tournaments in the state, as the Tourna- ment Director, senior president Tina Parker, and staff played host to over forty schools from across the Southwest. The pinnacle of the competitive season, however, was marked by their victory over long-time rivals, San Antonio Churchill H.S., a feat never before accomplished. First on the boards of the Smith stage, the festive Fall Show, DARK OF THE MOON, not only featured the amazing talents of the 1, T sr S i it 5 juniors and seniors, but also marked the debut of Ms. Patricia Mills, the new talented technical director. In December, auditions were held for this year's Winter Show, TOM IONES, setting the cast and crew firmly on the road toward yet another rewarding opening night featuring the many talents of seniors Lauren Bryant, Billy Merritt, and Mike Weis and sophomores Kyle Knecht and jenny Matejka. Once again, the department's backbone, their stage crew, including the tech- nical talents of seniors Sam Crutsinger, Bobby George, and Kim Tuck, joined forces with the cast to create more than just a set . .. but a stage fit for the hilarious es- capes and escapades of Tom Iones and his Sophia. As the year came to a close, the talented troupe of thespians had yet another successful U.l.L. One-Act play, Canterbury Tales. The spring show presented this year was called Working, a play which featured music and the underclassmen in the department. The squad also anticipated attend- ing the National Foren- sic Tournament in Iune. Serving final farewell to the seniors, the annual Recognition Banquet in May brought a senti- mental end to the scin- tillating school year of 1986-87 and an inspiring insight on the year to come. Now, the stage is bare, except for the glistening glow of a solitary stage light. Yet, it still echoes memories of magical moments and the op- timistic opportunities of the future. Yes, lT'S IUST A STAGE OF LIFE.
