OPER TIO Operations Department is primarily concerned with infor- mation. Where are we? How far away is that contact? Hey Doc, do you suppose I broke something? What schools can I apply for? What's that message about? These questions are familiar ones when the NEWMAN K. PERRY is steaming land some even when in portj and for the most part can be answered by personnel in Operations Department. For e xample, the Radiomen and the Signalmen are the message gatherers. From their work, the officers of the ship receive information about everything external to the ship-- plans, w e ath e r forecasts, rendezvous, what the rest of the world is doing, status reports, and so on AD INFINITUM Qyes, even the fact that someone's wife had a babylj, and are able to communicate with the outside world. The Quartermasters and the Radarmen, on the other hand, provide information concerning the movements of the ship--I position, place in formation, courses and speeds necessary. Information of a different nature is provided by the Hos- pital Corpsmen, Yeomen, and Persomlelmen. Finally, to most of us, the most important information is provided indirectly by the Postal Clerk. It is he who arranges the mail pickup and delivery schedules fusually depending on the carrier!J that mean so much to the crew. - V 1 1 LT EVANS-OPS OFFICER AVIG TIO The navigation d e p a r t m e nt kept the ship on course throughout the cruise especially on the way back. The Quar- termaters keep up the charts for the different ports the ship is to enter and map out the safest and quickest way to pull into a foreign port. They also keep the Bridge updated on the latest weather information. LTJG CAMPAGNOLO-NAVIGATION OFFICER s 1
