LT BECKES-WEAPONS OFFICER PPLY WE PO Newman K. Perry, is adestroyer, and as such, her mission is largely anti-submarine warfare. It is the destroyers and destroyer escorts that run interference in a task group, that sanitize an area before entry, that ensure th er e is no threat from enemy submarines, and, should such a threat become a reality, expedite the removal of the threat. The ASW mis- sion is carried out onboard by the Sonarman, Torpedomen, and ASROC Gunner's Mates. - . . Another facet of Weps is surface gunnery. There are tow five-inch gunmounts on Perry, and the fire control radar to control them, that the Gunner's Mates and Fire Control Technicians have the responsibility of keeping in operation. This affords Perry protection from enemy air and surface action. Thirdly, Bos'ns Mates- -the oldest rate in the Navy- -and Seamen are members of the Weapons Department. ,. - 0 We X V li! One of the main contributing factors to the morale of serv- icemen everywhere is their food. If the food is bad, morale is low, and conversely, good food can promote good morale. The Commissarymen fcooksj of the ship, therefore, have an im- portant job to fulfill. Similarly, food and supplies have to be provided if the ship is going to be operable. This is the job of the Storekeepers- - ensuring that enough food, spare parts, and supplies are avail- able to the ship. Also part of Supply Division are the men who provide the crew with hair cuts and laundry, and who operate the small but essential ship's store- -the Ship's Servicemen, and the men who take care of the staterooms, and provide food for the officers- - the Stewards. Finally, this department has the responsibility of paying the crew every fifteen days, and this is the job of the Disburs- ing Clerk. Although Supply Department's primary responsibilit is Y support, it plays a large part in fostering good morale for the men of NEWMAN K. PERRY. LTJ G REARDON SUPPLY OFFICER

The boilermen are responsible for the upkeep and opera- tion of four boilers that provide steam at 600 pounds PSI which drives the ship. The machinist mates maintain the care of the two engines, shafts, and all other pieces pertaining to propulsion. When the ship requires metalworking the shipfitters are called. They combine with the damage controlman maintain the ship's watertight integrity and the ability to withstand battle damage. The electricians and IC men ensure that the generators, wiring, lighting, internal communications, and, the ship's Gyrocompass are operable. T, Doroshenk, Engineering Officer

OPER TIO Operations Department is primarily concerned with infor- mation. Where are we? How far away is that contact? Hey Doc, do you suppose I broke something? What schools can I apply for? What's that message about? These questions are familiar ones when the NEWMAN K. PERRY is steaming land some even when in portj and for the most part can be answered by personnel in Operations Department. For e xample, the Radiomen and the Signalmen are the message gatherers. From their work, the officers of the ship receive information about everything external to the ship-- plans, w e ath e r forecasts, rendezvous, what the rest of the world is doing, status reports, and so on AD INFINITUM Qyes, even the fact that someone's wife had a babylj, and are able to communicate with the outside world. The Quartermasters and the Radarmen, on the other hand, provide information concerning the movements of the ship--I position, place in formation, courses and speeds necessary. Information of a different nature is provided by the Hos- pital Corpsmen, Yeomen, and Persomlelmen. Finally, to most of us, the most important information is provided indirectly by the Postal Clerk. It is he who arranges the mail pickup and delivery schedules fusually depending on the carrier!J that mean so much to the crew. - V 1 1 LT EVANS-OPS OFFICER AVIG TIO The navigation d e p a r t m e nt kept the ship on course throughout the cruise especially on the way back. The Quar- termaters keep up the charts for the different ports the ship is to enter and map out the safest and quickest way to pull into a foreign port. They also keep the Bridge updated on the latest weather information. LTJG CAMPAGNOLO-NAVIGATION OFFICER s 1
