COIVIIVIANDING OFFICER A native of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, Commander Charles W. Streightiff received his commission as an Ensign in June 1951, having graduated from Columbia University at that time as a member of the NROTC program. His first duty assignment was to the USS Rogers lDDR-8761 where he served as Com- munications and Navigation Officer from 1951 until June 1953. June 1953 saw Commander Streightiff assigned to the Staff of Commander Destroyer Division TWELVE, serving as Staff Operations Officer. Commander Streightiff's next duty assignment was to USS Saline County lLST-11911 where he served as Executive Of- ficer and Navigator from lVlay 1954 until lVlay 1956. His next set of orders directed him to report to Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Paris, France, for duty as Adminis- trative Assistant to the Senior U.S. Naval Officer, SHAPE. He remained in this billet until April 1958. In lVlay 1958, Commander Streightiff reported to the Staff of Commander Amphibious Squadron TWO for duty as Assis- tant Operations Officer. During this assignment, he partici-' pated in the Lebanon Landings at Beirut in July 1958. ln October 1959, he was ordered as Executive Officer to the USS Camp CDER-2511 where he served until August 1961. From September 1961 until October 1962, he attended the U.S. Naval Intelligence School at Washington, D.C. ln November 1962, Commander Streightiff was assigned as the first U.S. Naval Attache at the U.S. Embassy in newly independent Algeria. Here he opened and organized the ALUSNA office at Algiers. From November 1964 to lVlay 1966, Commander Streightiff served as Executive Officer, USS Davis lDD-937l, and, participated in one Mediterranean deployment, the Do- minican Republic operations, and the Davis's deployment to Soultheast Asia for operations with U.S. forces in support of the Republic of Vietnam. During this period Davis was re- cipient of the Arleigh Burke award for demonstrating the greatest improvement in battle efficiency in the U.S. Atlantic Fleet lcompetitive year 19651, and the Battle Efficiency E for the 1966 competitive year. ln June 1966 Commander Streightiff reported for duty with the Naval Intelligence Command. He served as Head of the Surface Warfare Section and the Support Requirements Coordination Division until August 1968, Commander Streightiff took command of USS Newman K. Perry lDD-8831 in September 1968. Commander Streightiff wears the Navy Achievement lVledal, The China Service, National Defense, Korean Service with four stars, Armed Forces Expeditionary, and the United Nations Service lVledals, and Korean Presidential Unit Citations. Commander Streightiff is married to the former Patricia A. Wright of Long Beach, California, and they have two sons, Steven and IVlarc. All presently reside in Newport, Rhode Island.
