0 Commander EDWARD STANLEY HAUGEN, USN, was born on 2 OcTober 1920 in Wallace, ldaho. 1-le re- ceived his bachelor of arTs degree from BeloiT College, Wisconsin, where he leTTered in l3oTh fooTball and wresTling and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon EraTerniTy. Eollowing his graduaTion in June, he was commissioned an Ensign in OcTober 1943. ln The midsT of World War ll and only four monrhs afTer commission- ing, he became Commanding Officer of moror Torpedo boaT 190.1-le survived The sinking of his ship in Augusr 19114, and in November of The same year while in com mand of a moTor Torpedo boaT paTrol in The Visayan Sea he sank all five ships of a Japanese convoy. The Sheppards have Two sons: William L., Jr., and RoberT Harvey. As an Ensign, Commander Sheppard was assigned To NAB, Coronado, California where he served unTil reassignmenT in ,OcTober 79411 as BoaT Group Gunnery Officer aboard The USS GALLATIN lARA-763i.
