I-le enrolled in The Navy V-72 Rrogram aT Mercer UniversiTy, from which he received his Bachelor of ArTs Degree in January 79414. ln April of ThaT year he enTered USNR Midship- men School aT Cornell where he was commissioned and married on 26 July 7944. l-lis wife, The former Ann Lindsey Chapman, is a graduaTe of Mercer UniversiTy. The Sheppards have Two sons: William L., Jr., and RoberT Harvey. As an Ensign, Commander Sheppard was assigned To NAB, Coronado, California where he served unTil reassignmenT in ,OcTober 79411 as BoaT Group Gunnery Officer aboard The USS GALLATIN lARA-763i.
